Siargao Month-by-Month: Surf Seasons, Rain and Island Hopping Timing

Siargao has two distinct seasons driven by the monsoon system -- and each offers a radically different experience. Getting the timing right depends entirely on what you came for: surfing, island hopping, snorkelling, or just beach relaxation. Here is the complete month-by-month breakdown.

January and February: Dry Season, Moderate Surf

The northeast Amihan brings clear skies and calm seas. Island hopping to Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island: excellent conditions. Cloud 9 surf: smaller and cleaner swells (1-2 metres face height), ideal for intermediate surfers. Sugba Lagoon: spectacular in clear Amihan conditions. Crowd level: growing as Siargao reputation spreads. Prices: approaching peak season levels. Accommodation books out -- reserve ahead.

March and April: Transition

Conditions: still dry and good. Surf: reducing as Amihan weakens. Sea conditions: calm, excellent for snorkelling and island hopping. The best overall month for non-surfers: clear water, manageable crowds, prices slightly below January peak.

May and June: Low Season Begins

Conditions: mixed. May sees increasing rain and wind. June: the start of the southwest monsoon. Cloud 9 surf: building again as ocean swells from the southwest begin arriving. Rough days interrupt island hopping. Prices: dropping significantly. June is actually excellent for intermediate to advanced surfers who can handle 2-3 metre swells in variable conditions.

July and August: Building Swell

Conditions: wet season in full effect. Rain is regular. But the surf at Cloud 9 is building toward its annual peak. August: consistently powerful surf (2-4 metre faces) with good shape when weather allows. Island hopping: weather-dependent, some days excellent, some cancelled. Accommodation: at annual low prices. The tradeoff: rain and occasional rough conditions.

September and October: Peak Surf Season

The best months for surfing. September and October deliver the most consistent and powerful swells of the year. Cloud 9 breaks at 3-5 metre face height on good days, with clean conditions when weather cooperates. The Siargao Cup international surfing competition was historically held in September-October. For non-surfers: island hopping is possible on calm days but rough sea days are common. Prices: rising from low season but still below January peak.

November: The Sweet Spot

November is arguably the best overall month for Siargao. The northeast Amihan begins establishing itself, bringing clearer conditions. Surf is still good (2-3 metre faces, cleaner conditions as the monsoon weakens). Island hopping is becoming reliable again. Prices are still 15-20% below January peak. Crowd levels are lower than December-January. An underrated month that experienced Siargao travellers know well.

December: Peak Season Returns

The Christmas-New Year period sees prices surge. December conditions are excellent -- clear skies, calm seas, decent surf. The island is busiest December 25 to January 5. Book accommodation 2-3 months ahead for this period.
