Philippines in One Week: The Absolute Best 7-Day Itinerary

Seven days in the Philippines. It sounds like not enough and in many ways it is not -- but with the right choices, seven days can deliver an extraordinary experience that captures the essence of what makes this country unlike anywhere else. This itinerary is built around the most efficient use of time, the best value for money, and the experiences that will stay with you long after you leave.

The Decision: Where to Go?

The single biggest planning mistake for a one-week Philippines trip is trying to see too many islands. The Philippines is not Thailand -- inter-island transport takes time, costs money, and the logistics of moving between Palawan, Cebu, and Siargao in 7 days will consume more time than it saves in experience. Choose one primary destination and one secondary. The two best one-week combinations:

Option A: The Palawan Week (Recommended)

Day 1 -- Arrive Manila: Land at NAIA. Hotel near the airport (Paranaque area) or one night in BGC for quick city orientation. Manila is overwhelming on arrival after a long flight -- do not plan much. A good dinner at a local restaurant and rest.

Day 2 -- Fly to Puerto Princesa, Underground River: Morning flight to Puerto Princesa (1 hour, book ahead). Afternoon transfer to Underground River (2 hours, requires advance permit booking via the Palawan Tourism website). The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River -- one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature -- is a 1.5-km boat ride through an underground cave system. Book the afternoon tour. Return to Puerto Princesa. Night in Puerto Princesa.

Day 3 -- Puerto Princesa to El Nido: Morning: explore Puerto Princesa briefly (Honda Bay if time, otherwise skip). Early afternoon: van transfer to El Nido (5-6 hours, PHP 250-400). Arrive El Nido evening. Settle in. Walk the beach. This transfer day is unavoidable but the scenery along the northern Palawan highway is worth it.

Day 4 -- El Nido Tour A (Big and Small Lagoons): The classic El Nido tour. Big Lagoon: paddle through turquoise water enclosed by limestone karst. Small Lagoon: accessible by kayak at high tide or swimming at low tide. Secret Lagoon: 10-metre swim through a rock crack. Shimizu Island snorkelling. Seven Commandos Beach lunch. This is the Philippines at its most beautiful.

Day 5 -- El Nido Tour C (Secret Beach): Hidden Beach, Secret Beach (swimmable cave entrance), Matinloc Shrine, Helicopter Island, Tapiutan Island. Tour C has the most dramatic individual moments of any El Nido tour. The cave-entrance swim to Secret Beach is genuinely unforgettable.

Day 6 -- Free Day in El Nido: Nacpan Beach (private vehicle, 30 minutes north of town) in the morning -- one of the Philippines most beautiful beaches with far fewer visitors than the lagoon tour beaches. Afternoon: kayaking in the town bay, optional scuba diving introduction, sunset on Corong-Corong beach.

Day 7 -- El Nido to Manila, Depart: AirSWIFT direct flight from El Nido airport (SEP) back to Manila (1 hour, book months ahead). Or van back to Puerto Princesa (5-6 hours) and commercial flight. Connect to international departure.

Budget Estimate (Option A, Mid-Range)

Option B: The Cebu-Bohol Circuit

Day 1: Arrive Cebu. Day 2: Oslob whale sharks plus Kawasan Falls canyoneering (both in same day with early start). Day 3: Moalboal sardine run diving plus afternoon ferry to Bohol. Day 4: Bohol -- Chocolate Hills, tarsier sanctuary, Loboc River cruise. Day 5: Bohol -- Panglao Island beach, Balicasag Island diving. Day 6: Ferry back to Cebu or fly to Siargao for 1 night if budget allows. Day 7: Depart from Cebu or return from Siargao to Cebu and depart.
