Manila to El Nido: All Flight Options Compared

El Nido is widely considered one of the most beautiful places on earth -- and getting there used to be an ordeal. For years, travelers had to fly to Puerto Princesa (the main Palawan airport, 240 km south of El Nido) and then endure a brutal 5 to 6 hour van ride on winding mountain roads. Today, that has changed. Direct flights into El Nido tiny Lio Airport have transformed the journey from a test of endurance into a genuine adventure. Here is everything you need to know about flying to El Nido.

Lio Airport: What You Need to Know

Lio Airport (LWA) sits right on the edge of El Nido town, less than 5 km from the main strip. It is a small regional airport with a simple terminal, no airbridge, and a runway that handles only small turboprop aircraft. There are no large jets -- maximum aircraft size is around 50 seats. The tradeoff is that you step off the plane and you are already in El Nido. No long van transfers, no ferry connections. Just you and the limestone karsts.

Air Swift: The Main Carrier

Air Swift is the primary airline serving Lio Airport. It operates Bombardier Q400 turboprops on the Manila-El Nido route, seating around 70 to 78 passengers. Flights depart from Manila Domestic Airport, adjacent to NAIA. Flight time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes each way. Air Swift typically operates 2 to 3 daily departures during peak season from December to May, and reduces to 1 to 2 during off-season. Book well in advance during peak season -- flights regularly sell out 2 to 3 weeks ahead.

Air Swift Pricing

Air Swift fares are higher than typical Philippine LCC prices, reflecting the lack of competition and the premium of direct El Nido access. Expect to pay 3,500 to 8,000 pesos or more one way depending on booking timing and season. December to January and Holy Week see the highest prices. Baggage allowance is included -- typically 10 to 15 kg checked -- which partially offsets the higher fare compared to LCCs with add-on baggage fees.

Booking Air Swift

Book directly on the Air Swift website or through select travel agents. Air Swift does not appear on most mainstream flight aggregators. If you cannot find a flight you expect to be available, try calling the airline directly. Flight schedules change seasonally.

The Puerto Princesa Alternative

Flying to Puerto Princesa (PPS) instead of El Nido opens up far more airline options and far lower prices -- but adds significant overland travel time. Puerto Princesa International Airport is served by Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and Philippine Airlines with multiple daily flights from Manila.

From Puerto Princesa to El Nido, you have two main options. A van or bus takes 5 to 6 hours and costs approximately 250 to 350 pesos per person, departing from the San Jose Terminal in Puerto Princesa City. The road through the mountains is scenic but genuinely winding -- motion sickness medication is advisable if you are susceptible. A private transfer costs 3,500 to 5,000 pesos and offers more comfort but cuts no time off the journey.

The total travel time from Puerto Princesa to El Nido door-to-door is typically 6 to 7 hours. Factor this against a 4,000-plus peso premium for a direct Lio Airport flight and make your own call based on your budget and time constraints.

Cebu to El Nido: Via Puerto Princesa

There are no direct flights from Cebu to El Nido. From Cebu Mactan Airport, you can fly to Puerto Princesa -- Cebu Pacific operates this route directly -- and then van north to El Nido. Total journey: 3 to 4 hours flying and waiting plus 5 to 6 hours overland. It is a full day of travel regardless of how you cut it. Consider whether a guesthouse night in Puerto Princesa breaks the journey more pleasantly.

What to Do After Landing in El Nido

From Lio Airport, tricycles and vans wait outside the terminal. A tricycle to El Nido town costs 50 to 100 pesos. To Nacpan Beach or the northern resorts, expect 300 to 500 pesos by tricycle or 200 to 300 pesos by shared van. Arrange your onward transport at the airport -- wait until you are outside and compare rates from multiple drivers.

Booking Tips: When to Buy

For El Nido flights during peak season from Christmas to Easter, book 6 to 8 weeks in advance at minimum. Air Swift limited capacity means flights disappear quickly. If you are flexible on exact dates, try Tuesday and Wednesday departures -- they tend to be slightly cheaper and less crowded than weekend flights. For off-season travel, you can often find decent prices booking 2 to 3 weeks out.

Is El Nido Worth the Effort?

Absolutely. The lagoons, the beaches, the island-hopping tours -- El Nido delivers on every postcard promise. The journey there is genuinely challenging if you go via Puerto Princesa, but with a direct Air Swift flight it is seamless. Budget for the premium, book early, and you will arrive fresh and ready to explore one of the world greatest coastal destinations.
