Best Hotels in Dumaguete: Budget to Mid-Range Options
Dumaguete is one of the Philippines' most underrated cities — a relaxed university town on the southwestern coast of Negros Oriental, with a lively boulevard, excellent food scene, and some of the best diving in Asia just offshore. Apo Island, a world-renowned marine sanctuary 30 minutes by banca from Malatapay, is one of the top reasons divers seek out Dumaguete. The city also serves as a gateway to Siquijor, Bohol, and Cebu via ferry.
Dumaguete's accommodation scene reflects its character — unpretentious, good value, and friendly. There are no international luxury hotel chains here, but there are excellent mid-range hotels and some genuinely comfortable budget options.
Best Areas to Stay in Dumaguete
Rizal Boulevard
The Boulevard is Dumaguete's seafront promenade — the centre of social life in the city. Locals and visitors gather here in the evenings to eat, drink, and watch the sunset over the Tanon Strait. Hotels along or near the Boulevard are the most atmospheric, putting you at the heart of what makes Dumaguete special.
City Centre & Siliman University Area
The area around Siliman University is quiet and leafy, with the ambience of a college town. Hotels here are typically small, family-run properties offering good value. A short tricycle ride puts you on the Boulevard or at the ferry pier.

Diving from Dumaguete
Apo Island is the highlight of any diving trip based in Dumaguete. The marine sanctuary supports a phenomenal density of marine life — sea turtles, large schools of fish, healthy corals, and occasional thresher sharks. Day trips depart from Malatapay Market (45 minutes south of Dumaguete by bus or van) and cost 1,500 to 2,000 PHP including the banca, the conservation fee, and a guide.
Dauin, just south of Dumaguete, has excellent macro diving with nudibranch, frogfish, and seahorse sightings. Several dive operators in Dumaguete organise trips to Dauin's muck diving sites, which attract underwater photographers from around the world.
