Dry vs Wet Season Philippines: Travel During Rainy Season?

The Philippines' weather is more complex than a simple dry/wet season split. The country experiences four distinct climate types, and what counts as wet season in one region is often dry season in another. The simple advice - visit November to May to avoid rain - is partially true but leads to overcrowded beaches and overlooked regions that are actually beautiful during the wet months. This guide gives you the full picture.

Understanding Philippine Weather Patterns

The Philippines has two main seasons nationally: the amihan (northeast monsoon, November to May) and the habagat (southwest monsoon, June to October). But the Sierra Madre mountain range on Luzon's east coast and the archipelago's orientation mean that these seasons play out differently across different regions.

The Climate Types:

  • Type I (pronounced dry and wet seasons): Western Palawan, western Panay, northern Palawan. Dry November-June, wet July-October.
  • Type II (no dry season, maximum rain December-February): Eastern Samar, Surigao, Davao Oriental. Rain year-round but peaks in winter.
  • Type III (not very pronounced seasons, short dry period March-May): Western Luzon, Cagayan Valley.
  • Type IV (rainfall distributed evenly throughout the year): Eastern Mindanao, much of the Visayas.

When to Visit Palawan

Palawan (Type I) has the most pronounced seasonal difference. Best time: November to June. El Nido and Coron are at their most beautiful January to April - calm seas, minimal rain, excellent visibility for diving. July to October sees rough seas in the Bacuit Archipelago; island hopping tours are frequently cancelled. The Puerto Princesa Underground River is accessible year-round but rough seas can affect the boat approach October-December.

When to Visit Boracay

Boracay's weather depends on which side of the island you are on. White Beach faces west and is calm and beautiful during the amihan season (November to May). During habagat (June to October), the wind swings to the southwest, making White Beach rough and windy - but this is exactly when Bulabog Beach on the east coast has perfect kitesurfing conditions. Best time for beach holiday: November to May. Best time for kitesurfing: June to October.

When to Visit Cebu and Visayas

Cebu and the central Visayas are Type IV - relatively consistent rainfall year-round with two moderate wet periods. The best weather is January to May (coolest and driest). June to October brings more rain but the typhoon track for major storms usually passes through northern Luzon and northern Philippines rather than central Visayas. Cebu is actually reasonably safe during wet season compared to northern regions.

When to Visit Siargao

Siargao is counter-intuitive: the surf is best during the wet season (July to October) when the northeast swell generates Cloud 9's best waves. The Siargao Surfing Cup is held in September. The dry season (February to June) has calmer seas, better island-hopping conditions, and more reliable sunshine. Surfers: June to October. Beach and island-hopping: February to May.

Typhoon Season

The Philippines experiences an average of 20 typhoons per year, most between June and October. The typhoon track most commonly affects northern Luzon, northern Visayas, and the eastern seaboard. Mindanao is largely outside the main typhoon belt - Davao, Camiguin, and CARAGA see fewer severe typhoons than northern regions. The most dangerous months for typhoons are October and November when storms are typically most powerful.

Traveling During Wet Season: The Honest Assessment

Wet season travel in the Philippines is entirely feasible if you choose regions and have flexible plans. The advantages: significantly lower prices (30-50% off peak season accommodation), far fewer tourists, and genuinely lush green landscapes. The disadvantages: some island-hopping tours cancelled due to rough seas, occasional flight delays, and the risk of typhoon disruption in northern regions. Mindanao and the eastern Visayas can be good wet season options. Palawan in July-October is the highest-risk destination.

Month-by-Month Summary

  • December-February: Best for Palawan, Boracay. Good for Cebu. Crowd season begins.
  • March-May: Peak season everywhere. Book accommodation early. Best weather Philippines-wide.
  • June-August: Rainy season begins. Good for Siargao surf, Davao. Avoid Palawan.
  • September-October: Typhoon risk highest. Siargao surf peak. Budget travel opportunities.
  • November: Transition month. Palawan opens up. Crowd season starts building.
