Davao Region: Eagles, Beaches and Mindanao Highlands
Davao Region (Region XI) occupies the southeastern coast of Mindanao and is the Philippines' most populous region outside Metro Manila. Davao City, the regional center, is one of the country's safest and most livable cities - a reputation built on strict law enforcement and decades of stable governance. Beyond the city, the region has the Philippines' highest mountain (Mount Apo, 2,954 meters), the extraordinary Philippine Eagle, world-class beach and diving on Samal Island, and the cultural complexity of Lumad and Moro indigenous communities in the highlands.
Davao City: The Durian Capital
Davao City is unique among Philippine cities for the quality of its produce markets. The city is the center of the Philippines' most sophisticated agricultural economy - it produces the country's best durian, mangosteen, pomelo, cacao, and Arabica coffee. The Magsaysay Avenue durian stalls stay open until midnight and offer tastings of different varieties. The musang king variety is the most aromatic; the puyat is earthier and preferred by connoisseurs. Buy a whole fruit at the Bankerohan Public Market for 150-300 PHP.
The Philippine Eagle Center in Calinan (25 km from city center) houses the world's most comprehensive Philippine Eagle breeding program. The Philippine Eagle (monkey-eating eagle, Pithecophaga jefferyi) has a wingspan of up to 2.2 meters and is one of the most critically endangered raptors in the world - fewer than 800 remain in the wild, all in Mindanao and the Visayas. The center's education programs and breeding success make it a conservation success story. Entry 80 PHP.
Samal Island
Island Garden City of Samal is accessible by a 15-minute ferry from Sasa Port in Davao City (75 PHP). The island has a long coastline of beaches ranging from accessible resort strips (Paradise Island Park, Maxima Resort) to wild, undeveloped coves accessible only by motorbike. The Hagimit Falls in the south are a series of natural swimming pools in a forested canyon (30 PHP entry). The Monfort Bat Cave houses the world's largest colony of Geoffroy's rousette bats - over 1.8 million in a single cavern (150 PHP). The Pearl Farm Beach Resort has the island's most photogenic location - floating cottages over clear water, with Davao City visible across the gulf.
Mount Apo
Mount Apo (2,954 meters) is the Philippines' highest peak - a volcanic massif on the boundary of Davao Region and Cotabato Province, designated a National Park. The summit is a 2-3 day trek from the trailheads in Kidapawan (Cotabato) or Kapatagan (Davao del Sur). The mountain has sulfur vents, crater lakes, diverse bird life (the Philippine Eagle nests here), and the last remaining stand of Luzon pine at high altitude. Guide and permit fees: 2,000-3,000 PHP, arranged through the local tourism offices. Best season: March to May.
Eden Nature Park and Malagos Garden Resort
Eden Nature Park (450 PHP) at 1,000 meters offers cool temperatures, zip lines, trail walks, and views over Davao Gulf on clear days. Malagos Garden Resort (150 PHP entry) in Calinan has a butterfly sanctuary, cacao plantation tour, and goat milk ice cream - a genuinely pleasant half-day outing from the city.
Lake Sebu and T'boli Culture
Lake Sebu in South Cotabato (technically in the SOCCSKSARGEN region but often visited from Davao) is a highland lake surrounded by the T'boli indigenous community, known for the most intricate woven textiles in Mindanao (t'nalak cloth, woven from abaca fiber in patterns revealed to weavers in dreams). Waterfalls cascade from the lake's rim into the valley below - the Seven Falls zip line over the waterfalls is one of the Philippines' most dramatic. 4-5 hours from Davao by bus.
Getting Around Davao Region
Fly direct from Manila, Cebu, Clark, or Cagayan de Oro to Francisco Bangoy International Airport. Multiple daily flights from Manila (1.5-2 hours). Within the region, Grab is available in Davao City; motorbike rentals and local buses connect to Samal, Eden, and the Philippine Eagle Center.
