Cebu to Bohol Ferry: Ocean Jet vs SuperCat vs Lite Ferry

Bohol is one of the Philippines' most beloved islands -- home to the Chocolate Hills, the Philippine tarsier, Alona Beach, and some of the best dive sites in the Visayas. Getting there from Cebu City is one of the most frequently made inter-island journeys in the country, and it is also one of the best-served. Three major operators run regular fast ferry services across the Cebu Strait: Ocean Jet, SuperCat, and Lite Ferry. This guide breaks down exactly what each offers so you can choose the right boat for your itinerary.

The Cebu to Bohol Route: Basic Facts

The crossing from Pier 1 in Cebu City to Tagbilaran Port in Bohol covers approximately 65 km across the Cebu Strait. Depending on the vessel and sea conditions, the journey takes 2 to 2.5 hours on a fast craft and 3 to 3.5 hours on a slower ferry. Tagbilaran is the capital and main port of Bohol province -- from here you can take jeepneys or tricycles to most island destinations.

There is also a secondary route from Cebu to Tubigon (northern Bohol), which is useful if you are headed directly to the Chocolate Hills area or crossing to Leyte via Bohol. The Tubigon route takes slightly less time (about 1.5 to 2 hours) but drops you farther from the main tourist areas.

Ocean Jet: The Premium Fast Craft Option

Ocean Jet is widely regarded as the most comfortable and reliable operator on the Cebu-Tagbilaran route. Its vessels are modern catamarans with air-conditioned seating in multiple classes: Tourist Class (standard seats), Business Class (wider seats, more legroom), and First Class (on select vessels, fully reclining seats at the front of the main deck).

Ocean Jet operates the most frequent schedule on this route, typically running 8 to 10 departures daily from Cebu Pier 1. First departure is usually around 6am and last at around 6 to 7pm. Travel time is approximately 2 hours. Fares for Tourist Class are around 280 to 320 pesos; Business Class runs 380 to 420 pesos. Booking online through the Ocean Jet website or app is possible and recommended for peak season travel.

Ocean Jet also connects Cebu to Iloilo, Cebu to Ormoc (Leyte), and several other Visayas destinations -- the same booking system works across all routes.

SuperCat: The Cebu Pacific of Ferries

SuperCat (also branded as 2GO Express on some routes) offers another strong option for the Cebu-Bohol crossing. SuperCat vessels are slightly older than Ocean Jet's newest fleet but still comfortable fast crafts with air-conditioned seating. The service runs around 4 to 6 departures daily on the Cebu-Tagbilaran route.

Fares are comparable to Ocean Jet, typically 260 to 300 pesos for economy. Booking can be done at the Cebu pier terminals or through the 2GO Travel website. SuperCat is a good alternative if Ocean Jet departures at your preferred time are sold out.

Lite Ferry: The Budget Slow Boat Option

Lite Ferry operates a different type of service -- slower conventional ferries rather than fast crafts. The Lite Ferry Cebu-Tagbilaran crossing takes around 3 to 3.5 hours (versus 2 hours on the fast crafts) but fares are noticeably cheaper at 120 to 180 pesos for open economy seating.

Lite Ferry is the choice for budget travelers, for those carrying large amounts of baggage or freight, and for passengers who genuinely do not mind taking longer. The slower pace also means slightly less fuel consumption (though that is rarely the deciding factor for travelers). Departure frequency is lower than the fast crafts -- typically 2 to 4 sailings daily.

Which Operator Should You Choose?

For most tourists heading to Bohol for the first time, Ocean Jet is the recommended choice: most frequent departures, reliable schedule, comfortable seating, and online booking capability. The extra 100 to 150 pesos over Lite Ferry is worth it for most visitors.

If you are on a tight budget and have time to spare, Lite Ferry is perfectly adequate for the 3.5-hour crossing and the savings add up if you are making multiple inter-island crossings.

SuperCat is a solid backup option when Ocean Jet is full, particularly for Holy Week departures.

Port Logistics: Cebu Pier 1

All three operators depart from Pier 1 at Cebu Port. The Cebu Port Area is in the Parian/Reclamation Area of Cebu City, accessible by taxi (approximately 80 to 120 pesos from Cebu IT Park or the Fuente Osmena area) or Grab. Allow 20 to 30 minutes from central Cebu during normal traffic and up to 45 minutes during rush hours.

At the pier, you will pay a terminal fee of around 20 to 30 pesos at the terminal entrance before boarding. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure for fast crafts, 45 minutes for Lite Ferry.

Arriving in Tagbilaran: Getting Around Bohol

Tagbilaran Port is the main arrival point for Bohol. From the port, tricycles take you anywhere in Tagbilaran City (40 to 80 pesos for short trips). Jeepneys to destinations like Carmen (Chocolate Hills) and Panglao Island run from the main terminal near the port market. For Alona Beach on Panglao Island, the journey is approximately 40 minutes by tricycle or multicab (150 to 200 pesos). Many accommodations on Panglao offer port pickup if you arrange it in advance.

Practical Tips

Book your return Bohol to Cebu ferry at the Tagbilaran Port ticket offices when you arrive, especially if you are visiting during Holy Week or other peak periods. Fast craft tickets sell out in both directions. Check the weather before the morning of your crossing -- the Cebu Strait can be rough during bad weather, and operators may reduce services or cancel sailings during storm warnings.
