Camiguin: Everything You Need to Know About the Born of Fire Island

Camiguin is called the Born of Fire island for good reason. This small volcanic island in the Bohol Sea off the northern coast of Mindanao has produced more volcanoes per square kilometer than any other island on Earth. It has four active or recently active volcanoes, a sunken cemetery, hot springs, cold springs, cascading waterfalls, and a white sandbar in brilliant turquoise water. All of this is packed into an island you can circle by motorbike in about three hours.

Getting to Camiguin

The most common route is via Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao. Fly to Cagayan de Oro (Laguindingan Airport) from Cebu or Manila, then take a bus or van to Balingoan Port (approximately 2 hours), followed by the ferry to Benoni Port on Camiguin (1 hour). Ferries run throughout the day.

Top Experiences on Camiguin

White Island Sandbar

The most iconic image of Camiguin is the uninhabited white sandbar approximately 2 kilometers offshore from Mambajao. Bangka boats to White Island depart from Yumbing shoreline and cost approximately P300-500 round trip. The water surrounding the sandbar is excellent for snorkeling. Visiting at sunrise with almost nobody else there is a genuinely transcendent experience.

Sunken Cemetery

When Mount Vulcan erupted in the 1870s, an entire barangay including its cemetery was submerged beneath the sea. A large cross now marks the underwater site. Snorkeling over the sunken cemetery is a uniquely eerie and beautiful experience.

Ardent Hot Spring

Natural hot springs feature a series of pools at different temperatures surrounded by lush vegetation. Evening visits when cool mountain air makes the hot water especially welcoming are memorable. Entry is P80-100.

Katibawasan Falls

A 76-meter single-drop waterfall surrounded by forest with a deep pool safe for swimming. Most impressive during and just after the rainy season when water volume is at its highest.

Mount Hibok-Hibok

For hikers, this active volcano (1,552 meters, last erupted in 1951) offers one of the Philippines more challenging and rewarding day hikes. Register with PHIVOLCS and hire a mandatory local guide before attempting the climb.

Practical Information

Rent a motorbike (P400-600 per day) to explore Camiguin. Accommodation ranges from P500 guesthouses to P4,000 resorts. The best time to visit is November through April. Explore Camiguin and Mindanao activities to plan your island experience.
