5 Days in Bicol: Mayon, Whale Sharks and Caramoan

Bicol Region in southeastern Luzon is the Philippines' adventure corridor. Within five days, you can circle the most perfectly shaped volcano on Earth, swim with whale sharks in the most responsible encounter in the country, and island-hop through a dramatic seascape of limestone cliffs and hidden beaches that has been the filming location for multiple seasons of international Survivor. The food is fiercely spicy (bicol express - pork, chili, and coconut milk - will change your understanding of what spicy means) and the people are among the friendliest in the Philippines.

Getting to Bicol

Fly Manila to Legazpi (Bicol International Airport) - 1 hour, multiple daily flights. Alternatively, take the overnight train (PNR Bicol Express, 10-12 hours, 800-1,200 PHP, romantic but slow) or overnight bus (8-9 hours). Legazpi City is your base for Mayon and Donsol.

Day 1: Arrive Legazpi and Mayon Volcano

Mayon Volcano (2,463 meters) has the most perfect volcanic cone in the world - symmetrical from every angle, unbroken by summit collapses. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, having erupted over 50 times in recorded history. The last major eruption was 2018. You cannot summit Mayon when it is active, but the views from the base and from Cagsawa Ruins are extraordinary.

Cagsawa Ruins: the bell tower of a church buried by Mayon's 1814 eruption, with the volcano perfectly framed behind it - the most photographed image in Bicol. Early morning is best before the clouds build around the summit. Lignon Hill Nature Park has a zip line over the lava flows with a Mayon backdrop (200 PHP). Evening: eat bicol express at Waway Restaurant in Legazpi City - the real, fiery version, not the tourist-tamed one.

Day 2: Legazpi City and Misibis Bay

Morning: the Legazpi City Albay Park and Wildlife has a bird sanctuary and views of Mayon over the bay. Afternoon: drive 30 minutes to Misibis Bay - a premium resort area on Bacacay peninsula with one of the most dramatic beach locations in the Philippines: white sand in the foreground, Mayon behind, Albay Gulf in between. Even if you are not staying at the resort, the public beach access areas give you this view for free. Evening: Embarcadero Legazpi waterfront for dinner with bay views.

Day 3: Donsol Whale Sharks

Drive 1.5 hours west to Donsol, the whale shark swimming capital of the world. Unlike Oslob (where sharks are fed), Donsol's whale sharks are entirely wild - they come to feed on plankton concentrations, and you are taken out on traditional boats to find them. No guarantee of a sighting (February to June is the best season), but when you find one you have 15 minutes of unstructured time in the water with an animal up to 12 meters long. The experience is profoundly different from Oslob - more real, more humbling. Registration fee: 100 PHP. Boat and BFF (butanding interaction officer) fee: 1,500 PHP per boat (max 6 people).

Evening: return to Legazpi. If it is the right season, firefly watching on the Ogod River (200 PHP) - thousands of fireflies light up the mangrove trees after dark in a natural light show.

Day 4: Caramoan Peninsula

Drive 2.5 hours south to Caramoan, or take the faster route via Naga City and bus. Caramoan is a remote peninsula in the southeast corner of Bicol with an extraordinary landscape of tall limestone karst islands rising from turquoise water - the setting used for French Survivor (Koh-Lanta) and multiple Asian Survivor seasons. The islands are officially designated as a tourist zone.

Island-hopping tour (1,500-2,000 PHP/boat): Lahos Island (beach camp, coconut palms), Matukad Island (steep island hike with panoramic view), Bugtong Bato Falls (freshwater waterfall flowing directly into the sea), and Gota Beach (long white beach, the main camp site used by Survivor production). The landscape is wilder and more dramatic than El Nido and almost nobody is here.

Day 5: Caramoan or Return

If you stayed overnight in Caramoan, spend the morning snorkeling in the crystal water between the limestone islands - visibility is typically 15-20 meters and the coral is in good condition. Return to Legazpi in the afternoon for your flight back to Manila.

Budget for 5 Days (Per Person)
