Heritage Hotels in Vigan: Sleep in a Colonial Mansion

Vigan is a time machine. Walk along Calle Crisologo — the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cobblestone street at the heart of the old city — and you are suddenly in the 18th century: stone buildings with wooden shutters and capiz shell windows, kalesa (horse-drawn carriages) clip-clopping over the cobblestones, the smell of empanada frying at corner stands, and the sound of church bells marking the hours from the Vigan Cathedral. It is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia, and it is magnificent.

Accommodation in Vigan's heritage zone is correspondingly atmospheric. Several ancestral houses have been converted into boutique hotels, and staying in one is a genuine experience — sleeping in four-poster beds, surrounded by antiques, in buildings that have stood for two centuries.

Best Heritage Hotels in Vigan

Villa Angela Heritage House

Villa Angela is perhaps Vigan's most romantic heritage accommodation — a lovingly restored ancestral house with only a handful of rooms, each furnished with period antiques and four-poster beds. The central courtyard is stunning, with bougainvillea cascading over colonial stonework. Rates from 4,500 PHP per night including breakfast. The owners are passionate advocates for Vigan's heritage and can guide you to the best hidden corners of the old city. Book well in advance — the property fills up months ahead during the Fiesta season in January.

Grandpa's Inn

Grandpa's Inn is a beautifully maintained heritage house on Bonifacio Street, within easy walking distance of Calle Crisologo. The rooms are large, the antiques are genuine, and the breakfast served in the colonial dining room is excellent. Rates from 3,500 PHP per night. The inn has a strong reputation for service and the staff are extremely knowledgeable about Vigan's history and attractions. One of the best value heritage stays in the Philippines.

Hotel Luna

Hotel Luna is the most ambitious heritage hotel in Vigan — a former ancestral house converted into a boutique property that also houses the largest art collection in Ilocos Norte. The corridors and common areas are lined with works by Filipino masters, giving the hotel the feel of an inhabited gallery. Rooms from 4,000 PHP per night. The rooftop restaurant has views over the old city's terracotta rooftops. A stay here combines historical immersion with genuine cultural enrichment.

Cordillera Inn

A more affordable heritage option in the Vigan heritage zone, with rooms from 2,200 PHP per night in an authentic colonial building. The rooms are simply furnished but authentic, and the location puts you in the heart of the old city. Breakfast is basic but adequate. For travellers who want the heritage experience without the premium price, Cordillera Inn is the most accessible option.

Non-Heritage Hotels Near Vigan

If heritage accommodation is outside your budget or fully booked, several modern hotels sit just outside the heritage zone. Vigan Plaza Hotel offers comfortable modern rooms from 2,500 PHP per night with airconditioning and a pool — amenities that the ancestral houses rarely have. It is a 10-minute walk to Calle Crisologo.

What to Do in Vigan

Calle Crisologo

The cobblestone street that defines Vigan, lined with 200-year-old houses with wooden facades, stone arches, and capiz shell windows. The street is best experienced in the early morning before tour groups arrive, or at night when the street lamps and candlelight from the windows create an atmospheric glow. Horse-drawn kalesa rides along Calle Crisologo cost around 200 PHP for a circuit.

Burnay Pottery

Vigan is famous for its burnay pottery — earthenware jars made using ancient techniques from local clay and fired in wood-burning kilns. The pottery district along Rizal Street has workshops where you can watch artisans at work and buy pieces directly. The heavy, practical jars are used in Filipino households for making vinegar and bagoong (fermented shrimp paste).

Vigan Longganisa

Vigan's famous garlic sausage is one of the Philippines' most celebrated local delicacies — small, intensely flavoured sausages that turn crispy and caramelised when pan-fried. Every breakfast in a Vigan heritage hotel includes them. You can also buy them to take home from the public market.

Getting to Vigan

From Manila, night buses connect to Vigan in six to eight hours (Partas Bus Lines and several others operate the route, with comfortable bus seats). Alternatively, fly to Laoag (45 minutes from Vigan by van) or San Fernando La Union (three hours south of Vigan) and take connecting transport. The bus route from Manila is the most popular option for travellers — overnight buses allow you to maximise time in Vigan without losing a day to travel.
