SOCCSKSARGEN: GenSan, Lake Sebu and South Cotabato

SOCCSKSARGEN (Region XII) is one of the Philippines' least-visited but most rewarding regions for travelers willing to venture beyond the beaten track. The acronym covers South Cotabato, Cotabato (North), Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City. The region is Mindanao's most stable and most agriculturally productive - it produces the bulk of the Philippines' pineapple, asparagus, and tuna. It is also home to the T'boli indigenous people and their extraordinary highland culture around Lake Sebu.

General Santos City: Tuna Capital of the Philippines

General Santos City (GenSan) is the Philippines' southernmost city and its tuna capital. The GenSan Fish Port Complex is one of the largest fishing ports in Southeast Asia - at its peak in September (Tuna Festival month), over 1,000 fishing vessels unload yellow-fin tuna caught throughout the Western Pacific. The Tuna Festival in September features a massive free outdoor market where you can buy whole yellow-fin tuna weighing 40-80 kilograms for 500-800 PHP each - prices that are surreal if you are used to Japanese sashimi prices. The city's restaurants serve tuna in every form: grilled, sashimi-style, kinilaw (raw, cured in vinegar), and as steaks. The Sarangani Bay (accessible from GenSan) has good diving and the Glan beach resorts on the bay's south shore are popular with domestic tourists.

Lake Sebu and T'boli Culture

Lake Sebu in the highland interior of South Cotabato is one of the Philippines' most culturally rich destinations. The T'boli indigenous community (population approximately 100,000) has maintained their traditional culture to an extraordinary degree - their t'nalak cloth (woven from abaca fiber in traditional patterns believed to be revealed to female weavers called dreamweavers in dreams) is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The T'boli women still wear traditional brass jewelry, bead accessories, and colorful clothing in daily life.

The Seven Falls (Hikong Alo, Hikong Bente, etc.) are a series of waterfalls descending from Lake Sebu's rim into the valley below. The zipline over the second and longest fall (800 meters, 1,200 PHP) is the Philippines' most spectacular - you fly over a waterfall and dense jungle canopy at 80 meters above the valley floor. The Lake Sebu Cultural Village has T'boli handicraft demonstrations, traditional music (the t'boli brass gongs and string instruments), and authentic t'nalak weaving for sale.

South Cotabato: Agricultural Highlands

South Cotabato province has a varied landscape: the Koronadal Valley's vast pineapple plantations (Dole Philippines operates here), the Marbel River valley for white-water kayaking, and the Banahaw Range highlands with good hiking. The Allah Valley in Surallah has hot springs (Sultan Kudarat Hotspring) accessible by motorbike. The Kulaman Plateau in the province's remote northwest is a highland savanna with Blaan indigenous villages - off-the-beaten-track territory for experienced travelers.

Sarangani Province

Sarangani is the region's youngest province - separated from South Cotabato in 1992. Alabel, the capital, is near the Sarangani Bay diving areas (coral reefs, sea turtles). The province has a famous connection to Manny Pacquiao, who represented Sarangani in Congress - his family compound is in General Santos City next door. The Glan municipality on Sarangani Bay has several beach resorts with good snorkeling and a more developed tourist infrastructure than the rest of the province.

Getting to SOCCSKSARGEN

Fly from Manila, Cebu, or Davao to General Santos International Airport (1.5 hours from Manila). From GenSan, bus connections reach Lake Sebu (2.5-3 hours) and Koronadal City. The region is safe for tourists; stick to the main destinations and connect with local guides for highland areas. See SOCCSKSARGEN and Lake Sebu cultural tours on PANA.PH.
