Romblon: The Marble Island Nobody Talks About

The Philippines has enough spectacular destinations that some genuinely remarkable places fall through the cracks of mainstream travel attention. Romblon Province - a small island group between Mindoro, Masbate, and the Visayas - is exactly this kind of overlooked gem. Romblon is the marble capital of the Philippines, producing 80 percent of the country marble output, and the evidence of this identity is everywhere: in the white marble dust on the roads, in the artisan workshops where craftsmen shape stone by hand, and in the marble monuments throughout the provincial capital.

Getting to Romblon

Accessible by ferry from Batangas Port on Luzon (approximately 8-10 hours on Starlite Ferries or Montenegro Lines overnight service to Romblon town). There are no commercial flights to Romblon. The overnight ferry from Batangas is best to save travel time.

Romblon Town: The Marble Capital

Romblon town is a charming provincial capital built largely from and decorated with the local marble. The 17th-century Fort San Andres overlooks the harbor from a hilltop providing spectacular views. The town market is where artisans sell marble products from small carvings to furniture-sized pieces. Watching marble craftsmen at work in the workshops along the main road is genuinely fascinating.

Beaches and Diving

Romblon Island has excellent beaches including Tiamban Beach (white sand, calm water, minimal development) and Bonbon Beach (a double-sided sandbar connecting two sections of the island that is increasingly featured in Philippine travel photography). The Blue Hole at Alad Island is a genuine diving attraction - a submerged volcanic formation that creates unusual underwater topography.

Tablas Island: The Largest Island

Tablas Island has its own distinct attractions including Aglicay Beach, the Looc Fish Sanctuary, and the annual Biniray Festival in January celebrating the Santo Nino.

Practical Information

Bring significant cash from Manila or Batangas as ATMs are limited. Accommodation includes Marble Beach Resort and various pension houses at P500-1,500 per night. Best time to visit is November through April. Explore Philippines hidden gem destinations.
