Palawan vs Visayas: Which Philippines Region Is Better?

This is perhaps the biggest planning decision for first-time Philippines travelers: do you spend your limited time in Palawan (El Nido, Coron, Puerto Princesa) or the Visayas (Cebu, Bohol, Siargao, Boracay)? Both regions are world-class. Both will satisfy most travelers. But they have genuinely different strengths and choosing between them based on your priorities makes a real difference.

The Quick Answer

Choose Palawan if: dramatic island scenery, limestone karst formations, WWII wreck diving, and relatively fewer crowds are your priority.

Choose Visayas if: variety, better transport connections, whale sharks, surf, diverse activities, and a stronger food/nightlife scene are your priority.

Scenery

Palawan: The most dramatic. El Nido's limestone karst towers rising from turquoise water are genuinely unlike anywhere else in the world. Coron's Kayangan Lake (clearest lake in Asia) and wreck-filled bay are extraordinary. The Puerto Princesa Underground River is one of the planet's great natural wonders. Palawan's scenery wins on visual drama.

Visayas: More varied, less jaw-dropping in a single spot. Bohol's Chocolate Hills are unique globally. Siargao has beautiful lagoons and pristine coves. Boracay's White Beach is world-class. The Visayas has more total diversity - you can move from volcanic black sand beaches in Camiguin to white coral sand in Bantayan to dramatic sea cliffs in Malapascua in the same week.

Diving

Palawan: Coron's WWII wrecks are world-famous and genuinely excellent. Tubbataha Reef (accessible April-June by liveaboard) is one of the top 10 dive sites on Earth. El Nido's reefs are decent but not the main draw.

Visayas: More consistently excellent and more accessible. The Cebu coast offers whale sharks (Oslob), sardine runs (Moalboal), thresher sharks (Malapascua), and excellent reef diving (Moalboal Pescador Island). Bohol's Balicasag Island is outstanding. Siargao and Dumaguete have underrated diving. The Visayas simply has more dive variety per square kilometer.

Transport and Logistics

Palawan: More challenging. AirSWIFT is the only airline to El Nido and books out months ahead in peak season. Puerto Princesa is better served (multiple airlines from Manila and Cebu) but requires a 5-6 hour bus ride to reach El Nido. Moving between El Nido and Coron requires either a short flight or a 2-day boat journey.

Visayas: Significantly easier. Cebu is the hub with frequent flights from Manila and multiple daily fast ferry connections to Bohol, Dumaguete, Siargao, and other islands. Boracay is 1 hour from Manila to Caticlan. The Visayas ferry network means you can island-hop without flying.

Time Required

Palawan: Needs at least 5-7 days for El Nido alone. Combining El Nido, Puerto Princesa, and Coron requires 10-14 days to do properly.

Visayas: Cebu, Bohol, and Siargao can be done in 7-10 days at a reasonable pace. A 14-day Visayas loop can cover 5-6 islands.

Budget

Both are similarly priced for mid-range travel. Palawan can feel more expensive because accommodation in El Nido has been inflated by high demand. The Visayas has more competition and more price points across its many islands.

For First-Time Philippines Visitors

If you have 7-10 days: Visayas (easier logistics, more variety per day). If you have 10-14 days: add Palawan, or do Palawan exclusively and do it properly. See our 2-week Philippines itinerary that combines both regions.
