Malapascua Island: The Only Place to Reliably See Thresher Sharks

There is a dive site in the northern tip of Cebu that draws serious divers from every corner of the world to a small, white-sand island most people have never heard of. The site is called Monad Shoal. The reason people come is the thresher shark, one of the most elegant and unusual sharks on earth, with a tail fin as long as its entire body. And Malapascua is the only place in the world where you can reliably dive with them. The sharks visit Monad Shoal early each morning to be cleaned by wrasse fish at a cleaning station, at around 20 to 30 meters depth, before dawn turns to day.

About the Thresher Shark

The thresher shark is unmistakable. Its upper tail fin is roughly equal in length to the rest of its body. They are shy, ocean-going sharks that rarely come close to reefs, which makes Monad Shoal so unusual. A typical shark sighting lasts 2 to 10 minutes. On a good morning, you may see 5 to 10 individual sharks.

Getting to Malapascua

Malapascua sits about 70 kilometers north of Cebu City. Take a bus or V-hire from the North Bus Terminal to Maya port, about 3 to 3.5 hours, costing PHP 130 to 180. From Maya, pump boats cross to Malapascua for PHP 100 to 150 per person. Plan to be on the island the night before your first dive since the thresher shark dive requires a 5 AM water entry.

Diving at Malapascua

A typical day: 5:00 AM boat departs for Monad Shoal; 5:45 AM enter the water, descend to 25 to 30 meters, wait for sharks; around 7:00 AM surface and return for breakfast; 9:30 AM second dive at Gato Island or the Dona Marilyn wreck. Dive packages run PHP 1,500 to 2,000 per dive inclusive of equipment and guide. Look for operators affiliated with PADI or SSI.

Life on the Island

Malapascua is tiny, about 2.5 kilometers long, with no cars, no ATMs (bring cash from Maya), and a refreshingly unhurried atmosphere. Fresh seafood meals run PHP 150 to 250. Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses at PHP 600 to 900 per night to comfortable dive resorts at PHP 2,500 to 5,000. Thresher shark sightings are most consistent from November through May. The combination of world-class diving, beautiful beaches, and genuine island hospitality makes Malapascua one of the best dive destinations in Southeast Asia.
