3 Days in Davao: Eagles, Samal and Eden Park

Davao City is Mindanao's largest city and consistently rates among the Philippines' safest urban centers. It is a city of durians, eagles, and excellent coffee - Mindanao grows the Philippines' best Arabica beans, and the coffee shops here take it seriously. Three days is enough to experience Davao's highlights and use it as a base for day trips into the surrounding region.

Getting to Davao

Fly direct from Manila, Cebu, or Clark to Francisco Bangoy International Airport. Multiple daily flights, 1.5-2 hours from Manila. From the airport, take a Grab or taxi to the city center (150-250 PHP, 20 minutes).

Day 1: City Exploration and Durian

Start the morning at the Davao City Museum (free) for context on the region's Bagobo and Matigsalug indigenous cultures. Walk to the Aldevinco Shopping Center - a covered market selling Mindanao textiles, brass work, and traditional Muslim crafts. You will find authentic malong cloth (tubular garment), hand-woven baskets, and brass betel nut containers that make exceptional souvenirs.

Afternoon: visit the Magsaysay Park waterfront and the Philippine Eagle monument. Eat durian at the Magsaysay Avenue durian stalls - Davao is the durian capital of the Philippines, and the fruit here is fresher and better than anywhere else in the country. The musang king variety is the sweetest; the puyat is more complex. Try both. Evening: dinner at Claude's Le Cafe de Ville on the Davao River for grilled local seafood and a view of the city lights.

Day 2: Philippine Eagle Center and Eden Nature Park

The Philippine Eagle Center in Calinan (25 kilometers north of the city) houses the country's most successful Philippine Eagle breeding program. The Philippine Eagle is the national bird and one of the most critically endangered raptors in the world - fewer than 800 remain in the wild. Entry 80 PHP; best to arrive by 9am before the heat. The birds are in large enclosures and you can observe them at close range. Combine with the nearby Crocodile Park (250 PHP) if you have children.

Afternoon: drive further up to Eden Nature Park (450 PHP all-in) at 1,000 meters elevation. The temperature drops 10 degrees from the city. Eden has walking trails through pine and eucalyptus forest, a horse ranch, zip lines, and a trout fishing pond (eat what you catch). The views over Davao Gulf are spectacular on clear days. Allow 3 hours.

Day 3: Samal Island

Take the ferry from Sasa Port to Island Garden City of Samal (15 minutes, 75 PHP). Samal is a large island with a long coastline of white sand beaches, mangrove forests, and dive sites. Hagimit Falls (30 PHP entry) is a series of natural pools in a forested canyon - excellent for swimming. Monfort Bat Sanctuary (150 PHP) houses over 1.8 million fruit bats in a single cave - the largest colony of Geoffroy's rousette bats in the world. They emerge at dusk in a river of black wings that takes 30 minutes to pass.

Pearl Farm Beach Resort (day pass 500-800 PHP) has the island's most beautiful stretch of beach with floating cottages over clear water - a great place for a final afternoon swim and dinner before taking the evening ferry back to Davao.
