This is general guidance and can change. Always confirm with the Philippine embassy/consulate or the Bureau of Immigration before you travel.

The visa-free rule is simple — the details trip people up

Here is the good news: most travellers never touch a visa application. The vast majority of nationalities walk straight in visa-free for 30 days, get an entry stamp, and start their holiday. What actually catches people out at check-in and immigration is not the visa itself — it is the small print around it. A missing onward ticket, a skipped eTravel form, or a passport that is a few months short of validity can turn a smooth arrival into a stressful one. Sort those three things in advance and your entry is genuinely a five-minute affair.

The 3 things that trip travellers up

1

Proof of onward travel

Airlines can deny boarding if you cannot show a flight (or ferry) leaving the Philippines within your visa-free window. Have a confirmed onward or return ticket ready before you check in — carriers are stricter about this than immigration itself.

2

eTravel registration

Every arriving and departing traveller must register at etravel.gov.ph. It is free and takes a few minutes — do it within 72 hours of your flight and save the QR code to show on arrival. Avoid any site that charges for it.

3

Passport validity

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry, with blank pages for stamps. If yours is close to expiring, renew it before you travel — this is the single most common reason travellers get turned away at the gate.

Staying longer than 30 days

Falling in love with the islands and want to stay? You do not need to leave. The Bureau of Immigration (BI) lets you extend a tourist stay on the spot, in stages, up to a total of 36 months — among the most generous extension policies anywhere.

Special cases worth knowing

🏠 Balikbayan privilege

Former Filipino citizens and their foreign spouse and children can enter for up to one year visa-free under the Balikbayan Program — travelling together with the Filipino family member. It is a far longer stay than the standard 30 days.

🛂 Visa-free with another visa

Some nationalities that normally need a visa (for example Indian passport holders) can enter visa-free for a short stay if they already hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, Schengen, Australia, Canada, Japan or Singapore. Check the current BI rule for your case.

🧒 Under-15 travelling without a parent

A foreign child under 15 arriving without (or not joining) a parent needs a Waiver of Exclusion Ground (WEG), arranged through the airline or BI. Plan this ahead if a minor is flying in with a guardian or relative rather than mum or dad.

Quick entry tips

🎫
Book a refundable onward flight if your plans are loose — it satisfies the airline without locking you in. Find options on our flights page.
📱
Screenshot your eTravel QR code so it works even without signal in the arrivals hall.
📅
Plan around the seasons if you are staying a while — see the best time to visit.
💵
Carry a little cash for BI fees if you intend to extend — offices process extensions same-day in most cities.

Philippines visa FAQ

Do I need a visa for the Philippines?

Most nationalities — including the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia and much of Asia — can enter visa-free for 30 days as tourists. A handful of countries get longer stays, and some need a visa arranged in advance. Use the checker above to see the rule for your passport, then double-check the official Bureau of Immigration list before you fly.

Is eTravel really free?

Yes. eTravel registration at etravel.gov.ph is completely free and mandatory for every arriving and departing traveller. Complete it within 72 hours of your flight and save the QR code. Ignore any third-party site that charges a fee for it — those are not official.

Can I extend my stay without leaving the country?

Yes. You do not need to leave to stay longer. Visit a Bureau of Immigration office (there are branches in major cities) and apply for a tourist visa extension. Visa-free entrants can extend in stages up to a total of 36 months, paying fees at each step.

Do visa runs (border hops) work in the Philippines?

They are unnecessary and not recommended here. Because you can extend on the spot at the Bureau of Immigration for up to nearly three years, there is no benefit to flying out and back just to reset your days. Extending is cheaper and far less hassle than a flight.

I only have a layover in Manila — do I need a visa?

If you stay airside in transit and do not pass immigration, you generally do not need a Philippine visa. If you want to leave the airport, clear immigration, or change terminals (NAIA terminals are separate buildings), you enter the country and the normal visa-free or visa rules apply.
