Philippines Festival Season: January-May Complete Calendar

The Philippines has over 42,000 barangays (villages), and virtually every single one of them has at least one fiesta (festival) per year. Add to this the major city and provincial festivals, the national Catholic celebrations, and the harvest festivals tied to agricultural cycles, and you have a country that is essentially celebrating something every single day of the year. January through May is the peak festival season, coinciding with the dry season when outdoor celebrations are easiest to organize.

January Festivals

Ati-Atihan Festival - Kalibo, Aklan (Third Week of January)

Often called the Mother of All Philippine Festivals, Ati-Atihan commemorates the historic pact between the Ati indigenous people and Malay settlers. Participants paint their faces black and wear elaborate tribal costumes as they dance through the streets for three days. The energy is extraordinary and increasingly participatory for visitors who embrace the spirit. Music, drinking, and dancing continue day and night.

Sinulog Festival - Cebu City (Third Sunday of January)

The Sinulog is arguably the Philippines largest street festival in terms of pure spectacle. Millions of devotees and tourists gather in Cebu City for the nine-day celebration honoring the Santo Nino (Holy Child Jesus). The Grand Parade on the third Sunday features contingents from across the country competing in elaborately choreographed dance performances. The street party around the venue continues for 24 hours.

Dinagyang Festival - Iloilo City (Fourth Sunday of January)

Iloilo City Dinagyang Festival is considered by many festival aficionados to be the most artistically accomplished of the major Philippine tribal festivals. The costuming, body painting, and choreography reach extraordinary levels of sophistication. The festival honoring the Santo Nino draws massive international media coverage and is increasingly popular with foreign visitors.

February Festivals

Panagbenga (Flower Festival) - Baguio City (February)

Baguio City in the Cordillera highlands celebrates its famous flower industry with the month-long Panagbenga festival. The Grand Float Parade in the final weekend features floats decorated entirely with fresh flowers in extraordinary designs. The cool highland climate of Baguio (16-22 degrees Celsius) makes February the ideal month to visit this mountain city.

March-April: Holy Week Festivals

Holy Week (March or April depending on the year) is a festival period unto itself, with Senakulo (Passion plays), Pabasa (Passion chanting), and the Good Friday processions representing the most uniquely Filipino of all annual celebrations.

May Festivals

Flores de Mayo / Santacruzan (Entire Month of May)

May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in Filipino Catholic tradition. The Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) celebrates with daily floral offerings at church altars throughout the month. The culminating Santacruzan is a pageant-procession combining religious devotion with beauty pageant tradition, featuring young women representing historical and biblical queens.

Planning Your Festival Visit

The Sinulog in Cebu, Ati-Atihan in Kalibo, and Dinagyang in Iloilo all occur in January and can theoretically be combined in a single trip with careful planning. Accommodation at all three destinations requires booking 3-6 months in advance for festival week. Explore Philippines cultural tours and festival experiences to plan your celebration itinerary.
