Mindanao is the most misunderstood major island in the Philippines, and a 7-day circuit of its three main tourist regions - Davao in the south, Camiguin in the north, and Cagayan de Oro as a hub between them - reveals an island of extraordinary diversity: world-class wildlife, active volcanoes, world-famous adventure sports, pristine sandbars, and a genuinely fascinating cultural landscape. This itinerary covers the highlights efficiently while leaving room to breathe.
Before You Go: Booking Checklist
- Book flights to Davao International Airport (DVO) and back from Cagayan de Oro (CGO) or vice versa - flying into one end and out the other eliminates backtracking
- Book the Philippine Eagle Center tour in advance - slots can fill on weekends
- Book the Camiguin ferry from Balingoan in advance during peak season (Christmas, Holy Week)
- Book white-water rafting in CDO at least a day ahead
Day 1: Arrive in Davao City
Fly into Davao International Airport (DVO) from Manila or Cebu. Check in to your accommodation in the city center or near the SM Lanang area. Explore the city waterfront at Davao River, eat dinner at one of the restaurants along JP Laurel Avenue, and try fresh durian at a fruit stand - this is the durian capital of the Philippines and there is no better introduction. Brief your tour operator on the next day's Philippine Eagle Center trip.
Day 2: Philippine Eagle Center and Eden Nature Park
Full day tour northeast of Davao. The Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos is the morning priority - arrive when it opens at 8 AM to see the eagles before the midday heat and before the weekend crowds build. Allow 2 hours minimum. After the eagles, continue to Eden Nature Park (about 40 minutes from the Eagle Center) for lunch with views of the Davao Gulf and optional activities like ziplining or horseback riding. Return to Davao City by late afternoon. See our Philippine Eagle Center guide for full details.
Day 3: Samal Island
Take the 10-minute ferry from Santa Ana Wharf to Samal Island. Spend the day on the beach at Kaputian or Paradise Island Beach, visit Vanishing Island (sandbar), and snorkel over the nearby reef. Return to Davao City by late afternoon ferry and board the overnight bus or van north to Cagayan de Oro - or rest another night in Davao and take an early morning bus the following day. See our Samal Island guide for beach details.
Day 4: Cagayan de Oro White-Water Rafting
Arrive in Cagayan de Oro - the overnight journey from Davao is approximately 6 to 7 hours, arriving early morning. Check in to your accommodation, shower and change, then join the afternoon rafting session on the Cagayan de Oro River. The 14-kilometer full course takes 2 to 3 hours and is the signature CDO experience. Evening in CDO - the city has a good restaurant and coffee scene; Centrio and Limketkai malls offer everything from Filipino food to international chains. See our CDO rafting guide for booking details.
Day 5: Dahilayan Adventure Park and Travel to Balingoan
Morning at Dahilayan Adventure Park in Bukidnon (1.5 hours from CDO) for the Dropzone zipline and the alpine coaster. Arrive early and do the Dropzone first before the afternoon clouds move in. Return to CDO by early afternoon, collect your bags, and take the bus or van east to Balingoan port (approximately 90 minutes). Take the afternoon ferry to Camiguin Island (1.5 hours crossing). Arrive in Camiguin, check in to your guesthouse or resort in the Mambajao area. See our Dahilayan guide for details.
Day 6: Camiguin Island Hopping
Full day island hopping: White Island at sunrise (arrange with your boatman the evening before), the Sunken Cemetery cross and snorkeling, and a stop at the Old Volcano ruins. Afternoon at Ardent Hot Springs (30-minute drive from the north coast). Evening walk around Mambajao town and dinner at one of the local restaurants. The island has a small but good food scene with fresh seafood and tropical fruit that comes cheap. See our Camiguin Island guide for the full picture.
Day 7: Camiguin Waterfalls and Departure
Morning at Katibawasan Falls and Santo Nino Cold Spring before your afternoon ferry back to Balingoan. From Balingoan, bus or van back to CDO (90 minutes) in time for your return flight, or continue north to Cebu for onward connections. Alternative: if your flight is from Davao, take the overnight bus from CDO directly back to Davao.
Budget Estimate for 7 Days

- Accommodation 7 nights budget to mid-range: 7,000 to 20,000 pesos
- Activities (rafting, zipline, eagle center, island hopping): 5,000 to 10,000 pesos
- Food 7 days: 5,000 to 10,000 pesos
- Transport (buses, ferries, tricycles): 3,000 to 6,000 pesos

Final Advice
Mindanao rewards travelers who approach it without preconceptions. The blanket reputation that keeps many visitors away is both partially earned (for specific western regions) and wildly inaccurate for the areas on this itinerary. Davao City's cleanliness and safety will surprise you. The Philippine Eagle will stop you in your tracks. Camiguin's volcanoes and sandbars will recalibrate your idea of what a small island can offer. Cagayan de Oro's river will demand every last ounce of your coordination and reward you with the adrenaline debt of a week. This is Mindanao - and it is exceptional.
