Luzon Road Trip: 10 Days from Manila to Batanes

Luzon is the Philippines' largest and most diverse island - a place where you can eat breakfast with a view of a perfect volcanic cone, have lunch in a Spanish colonial town unchanged since the 1700s, and watch the sunset from a clifftop over the Batanes sea channel that looks more like Ireland than Southeast Asia.

The Route

  1. Day 1: Manila departure - drive to Pampanga
  2. Day 2: Clark and Mount Pinatubo hike
  3. Day 3: Vigan, Ilocos Sur (UNESCO heritage city)
  4. Day 4: Laoag and Pagudpud beaches
  5. Day 5: Fly Laoag to Batanes
  6. Days 6-7: Batan Island - Sabtang and Itbayat
  7. Day 8: Fly back, drive to Banaue
  8. Day 9: Banaue Rice Terraces and Sagada
  9. Day 10: Drive back to Manila

Day 1: Manila to Pampanga

Leave Manila early to beat traffic. Pampanga is the Philippines' culinary capital - the province that invented tocino, sisig, and kare-kare. Lunch at Everybody's Cafe in San Fernando, a Kapampangan institution since 1945.

Day 2: Mount Pinatubo Hike

Mount Pinatubo's 1991 eruption was the second largest of the 20th century. Today the crater holds a stunning turquoise lake at 1,485 meters. The hike is a 3-4 hour return trip across hardened lahar flows. Guides are mandatory (500-700 PHP) and 4WD vehicles are needed for the first section (1,500 PHP/vehicle). Start by 7am to avoid afternoon heat.

Day 3: Vigan

Drive 5 hours north to Vigan, capital of Ilocos Sur. Vigan's historic district is the best-preserved Spanish colonial trading town in Asia - a UNESCO World Heritage Site where 16th and 17th century merchant houses still line the cobblestone streets. Eat empanada Ilocana from the street stalls near Plaza Burgos.

Day 4: Laoag and Pagudpud

Paoay Church (UNESCO) is a seismic-resistant baroque masterpiece. Drive to the Bangui Windmills on the coast, then continue to Pagudpud. The Patapat Viaduct is one of the Philippines' most scenic drives - a coastal elevated road with the sea below and mountains above.

Days 5-7: Batanes

Fly Laoag to Batanes (~1 hour). Batanes is the Philippines' northernmost province - rolling green hills, stone Ivatan houses built to withstand typhoons, and dramatic sea cliffs. Rent a motorbike for the Batan Island loop. Day seven: ferry to Sabtang Island - ancient stone architecture and fishing villages unchanged for centuries.

Days 8-9: Banaue and Sagada

Fly back and drive to Banaue. The Ifugao rice terraces are 2,000 years old and still farmed by hand. Hire a local guide and walk into the terraces at Batad. Drive 2 hours to Sagada for Sumaguing Cave and the Echo Valley hanging coffins.

Day 10: Drive Back to Manila

Stop in Baguio for lunch - the city market sells strawberry jam, ube products, and fresh vegetables from the Cordillera highlands. Arrive Manila by evening.

Practical Notes

  • Rent a car or SUV in Manila for around 3,000-5,000 PHP/day including driver (recommended for mountain roads).
  • Book the Batanes flights well in advance - small route with limited seats.
  • Batanes is weather-dependent - typhoon season (Jun-Oct) can cause multi-day cancellations.
