Davao City Travel Guide: The Safest City in the Philippines

Davao City sits at the southeastern tip of Mindanao, framed by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the slopes of Mount Apo - the Philippines' highest peak - on the other. For years it labored under the shadow of Mindanao's troubled reputation. Today, under consistently strong local governance, it has transformed into one of Southeast Asia's most liveable cities - clean, well-organized, famously safe, and the gateway to some of the Philippines' most extraordinary natural experiences. This guide tells you everything you need to know to plan your trip.

Why Davao Deserves More Attention

Davao is the third-largest city in the Philippines by land area - it is, in fact, one of the largest cities in the world by area, incorporating mountains, farmland, and coastline within its city limits. It is the commercial and agricultural capital of Mindanao, and the durian capital of the Philippines (more on that later). It is also the jumping-off point for the Philippine Eagle Center, Mount Apo, Samal Island, Eden Nature Park, and Compostela Valley's waterfalls. Any traveler who skips Davao in favor of going directly to Palawan or Boracay is missing something genuinely special.

Is Davao Safe?

Yes - consistently and remarkably so. Davao has ranked as the Philippines' safest city for many years, and routinely appears in surveys of the safest cities in Asia. The city has strict ordinances: smoking is prohibited in most public spaces, there is a midnight liquor ban in many areas, and littering carries genuine fines. The result is a city where the streets feel clean and the atmosphere is calm. For travelers from Western countries who associate "Mindanao" with conflict zones, the reality of modern Davao City is genuinely surprising. See our detailed guide to Mindanao safety for more context on the distinction between Davao and the areas that do carry higher risk.

Getting to Davao

Davao International Airport (DVO) receives direct flights from Manila (1.5 hours), Cebu (1 hour), and several other Philippine cities on Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia. There are also direct international flights from Singapore and some other regional cities. The airport is compact and well-organized. Taxis and ride-share services are available outside arrivals for the 20-minute drive into the city center.

Getting Around Davao

The city center is walkable for its immediate surroundings, but Davao is enormous in total area. For most tourist movements, you will use: Grab (ride-hailing app, works well and is affordable), jeepneys for short city trips at 10 to 15 pesos, taxis for longer trips at metered rates, and rented vehicles for day trips to Samal Island, Eden Nature Park, or further afield.

What to Do in Davao City

Philippine Eagle Center

The single most important attraction in Davao. The Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is the largest eagle in the world by length and wingspan and is critically endangered. The Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, 36 kilometers from the city center, is a captive breeding and rescue facility that houses around 30 eagles along with other endemic wildlife. Seeing a Philippine Eagle in person is one of those wildlife experiences that stops you in your tracks - the bird's size, the yellow eyes, the shaggy mane, all combine into something that looks almost pre-historic. Read our full Philippine Eagle Center guide for all practical details. You can also book our day tour from Davao.

Eden Nature Park

A mountain resort and eco-park at 1,000 meters elevation in the Toril hills south of the city. The pine-scented air is dramatically cooler than the city below, and the park offers zip-lining, a swimming pool, farm activities, treetop trails, and one of the best panoramic views of the Davao Gulf. A popular choice for families and couples. Book through our Eden Nature Park tour.

Samal Island

The Island Garden City of Samal lies just 10 minutes by ferry from the Davao waterfront and offers a completely different experience from the city. White-sand beaches, budget and mid-range beach resorts, snorkeling over nearby reefs, and a slower pace of life. Pearl Farm Beach Resort is the island's most famous property - a luxury resort built on stilts over the water that has been featured in international travel media for decades. See our full Samal Island guide or book the Samal day trip.

Davao Food Scene

Davao's food scene deserves its own guide. The city is the durian capital of the Philippines - you will encounter it at the airport, in street markets, in candy and ice cream form, and as a liquor-spiked durian wine. Whether you love or hate durian, trying it fresh in Davao is the authentic experience. Beyond durian, Davao has excellent seafood (grilled tuna belly is the local specialty), pomelo fruit bigger than your head, and a restaurant scene that ranges from traditional Filipino carinderia to international cuisine reflecting the city's cosmopolitan character.

Where to Stay in Davao

The city has accommodation at every price point. Budget travelers find guesthouses and hostels in the city center for 600 to 1,200 pesos per night. Mid-range hotels run 2,500 to 5,000 pesos. Marco Polo Davao and Seda Abreeza are the city's best business-class hotels. For beach accommodation, Samal Island's resorts range from 1,500 peso budget options to Pearl Farm's higher-end pricing.

Day Trips from Davao

Beyond the city's own attractions, Davao serves as the base for:

Final Thoughts

Davao City is the Philippines' most underrated major destination. It offers world-class wildlife (the Philippine Eagle), excellent beaches minutes from the city (Samal Island), mountain adventure (Eden Nature Park, Mount Apo), exceptional food, and a level of urban comfort and safety that surprises every first-time visitor. Give it at least 3 days - 4 or 5 if you want to add Mount Apo or explore deeper into Mindanao.
