Cebu in 4 Days: Waterfalls, Whale Sharks and Island Hopping
Cebu is far more than a layover. The island offers a remarkable range of experiences in four manageable days: swimming with whale sharks, canyoneering through a waterfall canyon, diving with thresher sharks at dawn, and snorkeling sardine runs so dense they block the sunlight.
Day 1: Cebu City
Magellan's Cross (1521) and the Basilica del Santo Nino are within walking distance of each other in the city center. Lunch at the Carbon Market for raw Filipino street food. Evening: Sugbo Mercado night market in IT Park - 50 food stalls, live music, and cold San Miguel.
Day 2: Oslob Whale Sharks and Kawasan Falls
Wake up at 4:30am. Bus or van to Oslob (3 hours south, 250 PHP). Arrive by 7am for the whale shark interaction (1,500 PHP, 30 minutes in the water). After Oslob, drive 30 minutes south to Badian for Kawasan Falls Canyoneering (1,400 PHP, 3-4 hours) - you trek upstream through the river canyon, jumping off cliff platforms and rappelling down waterfalls. Return to Cebu City by 7-8pm.
Day 3: Moalboal and Sardine Run
Moalboal is 90 minutes south of Cebu City. The famous sardine run is just 20 meters from shore - tens of millions of sardines form a shimmering column in the water. You can snorkel it for free, just wade in from the beach. Afternoon: dive the Pescador Island wall (2,500 PHP/two tanks) for sea turtles and pelagic encounters.
Day 4: Malapascua and Thresher Sharks
Early morning bus to Maya port (3.5 hours north). Bangka to Malapascua island (30 minutes, 150 PHP). The dawn dive at Monad Shoal: thresher sharks visit the cleaning station every morning at first light - these deep-water sharks are rarely seen elsewhere. 2,800-3,500 PHP/two tanks. Non-divers can walk the island's perimeter in 30 minutes and eat the best grilled fish of the trip. Return to Cebu City for your flight.
Getting Around
Hire a private van with driver for day trips (2,500-3,500 PHP/day) - more flexible than buses and costs little when split among 2-4 people.
