7 Days in Mindanao: Davao, Camiguin and CDO Itinerary

Seven days is the right length of time for a first-time Mindanao trip. Long enough to visit the three main destinations, Davao City, Camiguin Island, and Cagayan de Oro, without rushing. Short enough to work for travelers with a standard vacation allowance. And perfectly calibrated to leave you with a list of reasons to come back.

Day 1: Arrive Davao — Settle In, Night Market

Arrive at Francisco Bangoy International Airport. Take a Grab or airport taxi to your hotel in central Davao. Day one is for acclimatization. Davao's downtown is compact and walkable. For dinner, head to the Davao Night Market on Magsaysay Park, an open-air food court running along the waterfront where you can try grilled tuna, inasal chicken, kinilaw, and the freshest pomelo you have ever eaten. End the evening with a cup of tablea drinking chocolate from a street stall.

Stay: Marco Polo Davao (luxury), Microtel Davao (midrange), or guesthouses in the Poblacion area (budget)

Day 2: Philippine Eagle Center and Eden Nature Park

This is Davao's signature wildlife day. Arrange transport for 8:00 a.m. departure to the Malagos area, 36 kilometers from the city center. Spend the morning (8:00-11:00 a.m.) at the Philippine Eagle Center. Arrive early to see the birds most active in the cooler morning temperatures. Allow a full three hours. Do not rush the eagles.

Drive 20 minutes further up the mountain to Eden Nature Park for lunch at their restaurant, then spend the afternoon (1:00-4:00 p.m.) exploring the park's trails, strawberry farm, and viewpoints. Return to Davao for dinner.

Day 3: Samal Island Beach Day

Walk or Grab to Santa Ana Wharf by 8:30 a.m. and take the pump boat to Samal Island, a 15-minute, 15-peso crossing. Hire a tricycle at Babak Port to Kaputian Beach. Spend the morning swimming and relaxing. At noon, have a seafood lunch at a beachfront restaurant, grilled tuna and kinilaw. In the afternoon, visit Monfort Bat Cave for the late-afternoon bat emergence, which is an extraordinary sight. Return to Davao by 5:00 p.m. Book your Samal Island day trip in advance to ensure smooth logistics. This evening, book your bus or van for tomorrow's departure to Cagayan de Oro (3.5-4 hours on the highway).

Day 4: Travel Davao to CDO — White Water Rafting

Depart Davao early (7:00-8:00 a.m. bus departure recommended) to arrive in Cagayan de Oro by midday. Drop bags at your hotel and head immediately to the river. Afternoon white water rafting on the Cagayan River is the centerpiece of your CDO day. A 14-kilometer run takes 2-3 hours. You will return to the city wet, exhilarated, and very hungry. CDO has an excellent food scene. Try 22nd Street restaurants for good Filipino and international dining. The city version of pochero (slow-cooked meat stew) is one of Mindanao's best dishes.

Day 5: Dahilayan Adventure Park and Travel to Camiguin

Depart CDO at 7:00 a.m. for Dahilayan Adventure Park in Bukidnon (45-60 minutes). Spend the morning at the park, riding Asia's longest dual zipline (840 meters), walking the canopy bridges, and enjoying the cool highland air and pine forest scenery. Return to CDO by 1:00 p.m. and then continue north by bus or van to Balingoan Port (2 hours). Take the ferry to Camiguin (45-75 minutes crossing). Arrive at Benoni Port, Camiguin, by late afternoon and watch the sun set behind Hibok-Hibok volcano.

Stay: Camiguin Action Geckos (popular with divers and international travelers), Paras Beach Resort, or beachfront guesthouses in Agoho

Day 6: Camiguin Island Hopping — White Island and Sunken Cemetery

Full Camiguin water day. Book your Camiguin island hopping tour for a 7:30-8:00 a.m. departure from Agoho Beach. The standard circuit covers White Island (8:00-9:30 a.m., arrive before other day boats for the most memorable quiet morning on the sand), the Sunken Cemetery (10:00-11:00 a.m., snorkeling above 1871 volcanic eruption victims' graves), and the Old Volcano snorkeling area. Return to shore by noon.

After lunch at an Agoho beachfront restaurant, spend the afternoon on the circumferential road: visit Ardent Hot Spring for a restorative soak (open 24 hours, best at dusk), stop at Katibawasan Falls for a swim in the 76-meter cascade pool.

Day 7: Camiguin — Relax and Depart

Your last full day. If departing afternoon or evening, spend the morning at leisure. Visit the Camiguin market for pasalubong (lanzones preserves, dried fish, native coffee). Take the afternoon ferry to Balingoan and catch a bus or van to Laguindingan Airport for your homeward flight. If departing the following morning, take the morning at your absolute leisure. Camiguin is a place for sitting on a beachfront veranda drinking coffee and looking at the volcano. Do exactly that.

What This Itinerary Teaches You

Seven days in Mindanao teaches you that the Philippines you thought you knew was incomplete. You thought Philippine wildlife meant sea turtles and clownfish. You discover a Philippine Eagle whose gaze you will remember for years. You thought adventure meant island hopping. You discover that it also means a river canyon in CDO and a zipline through highland pine forest in Bukidnon. Mindanao is the Philippines for people who want to discover what the greatest hits are obscuring. Seven days. Start in Davao. Follow the road north.
