Western Visayas Travel Guide: Iloilo, Boracay and Guimaras

Western Visayas (Region VI) is an underappreciated gem in the Philippine archipelago. Most travelers fly straight to Boracay and miss the broader region - the heritage-packed city of Iloilo, the mango paradise of Guimaras island, the sugar plantation towns of Negros Occidental, and the rice terraces of Antique province. This guide covers the full region with practical advice on getting around.

Boracay

The headline attraction needs little introduction. White Beach - 4 kilometers of powder-white sand on the island's western coast - is the Philippines' most famous destination and consistently one of the best beaches in the world. The beach was cleaned up after a 2018 government-ordered closure that removed illegal structures and rehabilitated the water quality. The result is dramatically better than before: the water is clear again, the overcrowding reduced, and the carrying capacity strictly managed.

Stay at Station 1 (quietest, highest-end hotels), Station 2 (busiest, most restaurants and bars), or Station 3 (most budget-friendly). Fly to Caticlan Airport (10 minutes from the ferry port) for direct access, or to Kalibo (90-minute bus transfer, more flight options).

Iloilo City

Iloilo City on Panay Island is one of the Philippines' most underrated destinations. The city has outstanding colonial heritage (it was the third most important city in the Spanish Philippines after Manila and Cebu), a world-class food scene (try batchoy - noodle soup with offal and chicharron - at Ted's Old Timer La Paz Batchoy), and the Dinagyang Festival in January - one of the Philippines' most visually stunning festivals.

The Jaro Cathedral is perhaps the Philippines' only church with a separate belfry taller than the church itself. The Molo Church and Plaza is famous for its Baroque facade and the legendary Molo Mansion nearby. The Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) is the best contemporary art museum outside Manila. Take the Iloilo River Esplanade at sunset for a 2-kilometer riverside walk past beautifully restored Spanish-era buildings.

Guimaras Island

Guimaras is a 30-minute ferry from Iloilo City (75 PHP) and one of the Philippines' most pleasant day trips or overnight stops. The island produces the Philippines' sweetest mangoes (Carabao variety) - the annual Manggahan Festival in May celebrates the harvest. Visit the mango farms in Jordan municipality and taste the fruit directly from the tree. The Roca Encantada ruins (a former American plantation house from the 1920s) and the San Miguel Island sandbar are worth the short motorbike ride to the coast.

Negros Occidental

The northern half of Negros Island (Western Visayas) is sugar country - a landscape of vast cane plantations with charming hacienda towns. Bacolod City is the capital and home to the Masskara Festival (October) - the Philippines' most colorful festival, featuring thousands of smiling masks. The city's culinary claim to fame is chicken inasal (charcoal-grilled chicken marinated in vinegar, calamansi, and annatto) - try the original at Manokan Country.

Antique Province

On the west coast of Panay, Antique is the region's most underdeveloped and most beautiful province. The Malalison Island off Culasi has pristine beaches and no resort development. The Malumpati Cold Spring near Tibiao is a natural swimming hole fed by mountain springs at 23 degrees Celsius. The Tibiao River hosts kayaking and bamboo rafting through jungle rapids.

Getting Around Western Visayas

Iloilo is the regional transport hub. Ferries connect Iloilo to Bacolod (1 hour), Guimaras (30 minutes), and Manila overnight. Caticlan (gateway to Boracay) is a 4-hour bus from Iloilo. Regional airports serve Kalibo, Caticlan, and Bacolod directly from Manila and Cebu.
