Whale Watching Philippines: Best Spots and Seasons for Every Species

The Philippines is one of Southeast Asias best whale and dolphin watching destinations, but the experience varies enormously depending on where you go and when you visit. This guide covers every major species you might encounter and the best locations and seasons for each.

Whale Sharks (Butanding): Year-Round but Best November-May

Whale sharks are not technically whales but they are the Philippines most famous large marine species attraction. The most accessible encounters are in Oslob in Cebu, where whale sharks are fed by fishermen and almost guaranteed to be present every morning. More ethically sound are the wild encounters in Donsol, Sorsogon, where whale sharks aggregate seasonally (November to June, peak January-April) to feed on plankton without provisioning. The Donsol experience is considered the gold standard for responsible whale shark tourism globally. Book whale shark tours well in advance for the peak Donsol season.

Sperm Whales and Other Cetaceans: Tanon Strait

The Tanon Strait between Cebu and Negros Oriental is one of the only straits in the world with a resident sperm whale population. Research expeditions have documented sperm whales, spinner dolphins, Fraser's dolphins, and occasionally false killer whales and pygmy sperm whales. Several operators in Bais City, Negros Oriental, offer dolphin and whale watching cruises in Tanon Strait. Best months are March through October when sea conditions are calmer and sightings are more frequent.

Spinner Dolphins: Pamilacan Island, Bohol

Pamilacan Island off the southern coast of Bohol has some of the Philippines most reliable spinner dolphin encounters. Large pods (50-200 dolphins) are regularly seen early in the morning before they move offshore to deeper water for the day. Sunrise boat tours from Baclayon or Anda in Bohol provide the best opportunities.

Blue Whales and Bryde's Whales: Bohol Sea

The deep waters of the Bohol Sea (between Bohol, Camiguin, Leyte, and Cebu) serve as feeding and migration routes for large baleen whales including blue whales, Bryde's whales, and Cuvier's beaked whales. These sightings are less predictable than the Tanon Strait encounters and typically require specialized liveaboard research vessel access.

Irrawaddy Dolphins: Malampaya Sound, Palawan

Malampaya Sound in northern Palawan is one of only a handful of places in the world where critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) can be encountered. A strictly limited number of tour permits are issued. Contact Palawan NGOs and local tour operators in Taytay municipality to arrange responsible viewing.

Practical Tips

The best whale watching conditions require calm seas - November through May is generally more reliable than the June to October typhoon season. Bring binoculars, a telephoto lens if you have one, and patience. The best encounters are always on the ocean's terms. Always use operators who maintain proper minimum approach distances and do not chase or encircle cetaceans.
