Philippines Surfing Seasons: When and Where to Surf All Year

The Philippines occupies a unique position in the surfing world. The archipelago sits in the Pacific typhoon belt, which means there is almost always a swell somewhere in the country - and knowing where to be for the right swell at the right time is the key to getting the most out of surfing the Philippines throughout the year.

Understanding Philippine Surf Seasons

The Philippines has two main monsoon seasons that drive surf conditions: the Habagat (southwest monsoon, June-October) which generates swells on the east-facing coasts, and the Amihan (northeast monsoon, November-April) which generates swells on the west-facing and north-facing coasts. Different surf destinations peak at different times of year as a result.

Siargao: October to March

Siargao is the Philippines undisputed surf capital and home to the famous Cloud 9 break - a hollow, powerful reef break that has hosted international surfing competitions and is considered one of the best waves in Southeast Asia. Cloud 9 fires best from October through March when the northeast swell wraps around the island. Consistent 3-6 foot sets with occasional larger swells on typhoon groundswells make this one of the most reliable waves in the region. The annual Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup held each October attracts professional surfers from around the world.

La Union: November to March

La Union in northern Luzon on the South China Sea coast is a beach break that fires during the northeast monsoon from November to March. The surfing scene here is more social and beginner-friendly than Siargao - multiple surf schools cater to first-timers and the beach strip has an increasingly vibrant food and nightlife scene that complements the surfing.

Baler, Aurora: October to March

Baler on the Pacific coast of Luzon is considered the birthplace of Philippine surfing (linked to the filming of Apocalypse Now here in 1977). Sabang Beach offers consistent beach break waves best from October to March. The town has a charming low-key surf culture and excellent fresh seafood.

Catanduanes: June to October

Catanduanes Island south of Luzon is the Philippines best kept surf secret for powerful waves. Puraran Beach is home to the famous Majestic surf break - a powerful, hollow reef break that fires during the southwest monsoon from June through October. It is a more advanced wave not suited to beginners but outstanding for experienced surfers seeking less crowded conditions than Siargao.

Bagasbas Beach, Camarines Norte: June to October

Bagasbas offers accessible beach break surfing during the southwest monsoon. Multiple surf schools operate here during the June to October season and the uncrowded waves make it excellent for intermediate surfers improving their skills.

Practical Surfing Tips

Bring your own equipment if you are picky about board quality - rental boards at most Philippine surf spots are adequate for beginners but experienced surfers will want their own sticks. All major surf destinations have at least one surf school. Reef breaks (Siargao Cloud 9, Catanduanes Majestic) require reef booties and experience with powerful waves.
