10 Days in Mindanao: Davao, Camiguin and Surigao
Mindanao has an image problem. But here is the reality: the vast majority of Mindanao's landmass and population centers are entirely safe, and the island contains some of the Philippines' most spectacular and crowd-free experiences. This 10-day itinerary focuses on three of its safest and most rewarding destinations: Davao, Camiguin, and the Caraga region around Surigao.
Days 1-3: Davao City
Fly direct to Davao from Manila (1.5 hours). Davao is one of the Philippines' safest cities with excellent coffee (Mindanao grows the Philippines' best Arabica beans) and a sophisticated food scene.
Day one: Eden Nature Park, a highland retreat at 1,000 meters with cool air and zip lines. Day two: Philippine Eagle Center - the Philippine Eagle is the world's largest eagle by wingspan (80 PHP entry). Day three: day trip to Samal Island by ferry (15 minutes) for diving and Hagimit Falls.
Days 4-6: Camiguin Island
Fly Davao to Cagayan de Oro, then ferry to Camiguin. Camiguin is a tiny island (265 sq km) with five volcanoes - more volcanoes per square kilometer than any other island on Earth.
Day four: Katibawasan Falls (75-meter drop, 30 PHP entry) and Ardent Hot Springs. Day five: boat tour to White Island sandbar and snorkel the Sunken Cemetery. Day six: hike Mount Hibok-Hibok (2,000 meters, active volcano) - 6-hour return, guide fee 1,200 PHP.
Days 7-10: Siargao and Surigao
Ferry back to Mindanao mainland, then fly or ferry to Siargao. Three days covers Cloud 9 surfing, the Naked-Daku-Guyam island hopping, and Sugba Lagoon. Day ten: if you have time, Sohoton Cove in Bucas Grande island - a hidden lagoon with jellyfish lake, dark caves, and one of the Philippines' most extraordinary natural experiences.
Safety Note
Check current travel advisories for specific Mindanao provinces. Davao Region, Camiguin, and the Siargao/Surigao area are generally considered safe for tourists.
