Cebu Month-by-Month: Best Time for Whale Sharks, Canyoneering and Beaches

Cebu is one of the most weather-versatile destinations in the Philippines. Protected by surrounding islands and its central location, Cebu generally avoids the worst of the typhoon season that affects Luzon and Eastern Visayas. Here is the complete seasonal guide.

January and February: Peak Season, Best Conditions

The northeast Amihan delivers clear skies and calm seas. This is peak season for Cebu: whale shark watching at Oslob (year-round but best visibility in clear Amihan conditions), canyoneering at Kawasan Falls, and diving at Moalboal (sardine run is year-round but January-February visibility is exceptional at 20-30m). Sinulog festival falls on the third Sunday of January -- the biggest festival in the Philippines, with 3 million participants in Cebu City. Book accommodation 4-6 months ahead for Sinulog week.

March and April: Excellent for Everything

March and April are arguably the best overall months for Cebu: still dry and clear but with 20-30% lower prices than peak season. Moalboal diving, Kawasan Falls canyoneering, and Thresher Shark diving at Malapascua are all in excellent condition. Bantayan Island beaches are at their best. Temperatures rise (32-35 degrees Celsius) but sea conditions are ideal.

May and June: Value Season Begins

Conditions: mostly good with increasing afternoon rain. Whale sharks at Oslob: year-round operation, conditions still good. Canyoneering: still operating daily. Diving at Moalboal and Malapascua: excellent visibility. Prices: 25-35% below January peak. An excellent value window that too many travellers skip because they see May-June as low season.

July and August: Rainy Season, Not as Bad as You Think

Cebu in July-August gets rain but is significantly sheltered from the worst southwest monsoon effects due to its central location. Most days see some sunshine interrupted by rain periods. Diving continues (visibility reduces slightly to 10-15m). Kawasan Falls canyoneering runs when river levels are safe (some disruption after heavy rain). Oslob whale sharks: year-round operation. Prices: at their lowest.

September and October: Quietest and Cheapest

Cebu in September-October is the quietest and cheapest period. Typhoon risk is statistically low compared to Luzon. The sea is warming after wet season and marine life is active. Thresher sharks at Malapascua: September-October is excellent with reliable early morning sightings. This is one of the best-kept secrets in Cebu travel.

November and December: The Return of Good Weather

November sees improving conditions and rising tourist numbers. December is busy with domestic Christmas travel. The period December 23 to January 6 is the domestic holiday peak -- transport books out, accommodation fills in tourist areas, and prices rise sharply. Sinulog week in January is the hardest accommodation period of all.
