Bohol Month-by-Month: When the Chocolate Hills Are Most Beautiful

Bohol is one of the Philippines most visitor-friendly destinations with generally good year-round conditions. Unlike Palawan or Siargao which have very distinct wet and dry seasons, Bohol in the Visayas has a more moderate seasonal pattern. Here is the complete monthly breakdown.

January and February: Peak and Best

Clear skies, calm seas, low rainfall. Chocolate Hills: bright green with clear air -- ideal for photos. Tarsier Sanctuary: visits in the cool early morning before peak visitor heat. Panglao Island: excellent diving visibility (20-25m) at Balicasag Island. Alona Beach: at its most beautiful but also most crowded. Prices: 30-50% above low season. For most travellers this is the best time to visit Bohol.

March and April: Excellent, Better Value

Conditions remain dry and excellent. The Chocolate Hills are still photogenic green (they turn brown in the hottest summer months, typically April-May). Diving at Balicasag: still excellent. Prices: beginning to drop from January peak, especially in the last two weeks of April. March is excellent: peak season weather with shoulder season crowds on some weekdays.

May: The Brown Hills

May and early June is when the Chocolate Hills turn their characteristic brown -- the grass dries in the summer heat. Some travellers specifically target this period for the iconic brown hills photos. Sea conditions: transitional, generally still good. Prices: dropping toward low season levels.

June Through August: Rainy Season

Bohol in the wet season is rainier than many travellers expect. The Loboc River cruise continues year-round but the river is higher and faster after rain. Chocolate Hills: green again after rains return. Alona Beach diving continues but visibility reduces to 10-15m. The island is quiet in this period -- a genuine low-season experience.

September and October: Very Quiet

The quietest and cheapest period. September and October see minimal tourists at the Chocolate Hills, tarsier sanctuary, and Panglao beaches. Typhoon risk for Bohol: statistically lower than Leyte or Northern Samar but not zero. The atmosphere is genuinely local. Good weeks for travellers who want the real Philippines experience without the tourist bubble.

November and December: Recovery and Holiday

November sees improving conditions and rising visitor numbers. December is the domestic holiday season and accommodation books out in the Christmas-New Year period. Alona Beach and Panglao hotels are in high demand December 23 to January 5. The diving at Balicasag is excellent in December with clearing water from the returning northeast monsoon.
