WW2 Philippines: A Traveler Guide to Historic Battlefields and Memorials

WW2 Philippines

The Philippines endured one of the Pacific Wars most brutal occupations from December 1941 to August 1945. Islands now on bucket lists were scenes of desperate resistance and massive civilian suffering.

Bataan Death March

After the fall of Bataan in April 1942, approximately 75,000 Filipino and American POWs were forced to march 97 km to Camp ODonnell. Between 6,000 and 11,000 died. The Mount Samat National Shrine -- a massive concrete cross visible from Manila Bay -- marks the peninsula. The Death March Memorial Highway runs the full route. Practical: 3-4 hours from Manila by bus.

Corregidor Island

The most accessible WW2 site in the Philippines. This island at the mouth of Manila Bay held out until May 1942. See Malinta Tunnel (laterite bunker with sound-and-light show), Battery Way (original 12-inch mortars in position), Pacific War Memorial (American-built), and miles of ruins. Day trips from Manila CCP pier via Sun Cruises, approx PHP 2,200-2,800.

Leyte Gulf

The Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 23-26, 1944) involved 367 ships and 200,000 personnel -- the largest naval battle in history. Kamikaze attacks began here. MacArthur waded ashore at Red Beach, Palo, declaring I have returned. The MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park preserves that beach with bronze statues at the waters edge. Fly to Tacloban; Palo is 15 minutes by tricycle.

Manila

The Battle of Manila (February-March 1945) killed an estimated 100,000 Filipino civilians -- one of WW2s worst urban massacres. Fort Santiago (dungeon areas open) and the Manila American Cemetery (17,206 graves, largest US military cemetery in the Pacific, free entry) are essential stops.
