Siquijor: Beyond the Myths - A Complete Travel Guide
Siquijor has a reputation that precedes it. Filipinos know this small island in the Central Visayas as a place of mangkukulam (witch doctors), mysterious healing practices, and ancient folklore. The reality is far more interesting and far less sinister: it is simply one of the Philippines most beautiful and atmospheric islands, where old traditions coexist with excellent beaches, world-class diving, and a growing community of travelers who discovered that the best-kept secrets are worth seeking out.
Getting to Siquijor
Siquijor is reached by fast ferry from Dumaguete (approximately 40-50 minutes, Oceanjet operates multiple daily departures), from Cebu City (approximately 7-8 hours slow ferry or 3.5 hours fast craft), or from Tagbilaran in Bohol (approximately 1.5-2 hours). The Dumaguete route is most popular as Dumaguete is well connected by air from Manila and Cebu.
Best Beaches
Paliton Beach
Paliton Beach in San Juan is Siquijors most photographed beach. The long curve of fine white sand backed by ancient trees creates an atmosphere unlike the manicured resort beaches of Boracay or Panglao. At the western end, enormous acacia trees lean dramatically over the water, providing extraordinary photography opportunities. Sunset at Paliton is spectacular.

Salagdoong in Maria municipality is famous for its cliff diving platforms. Visitors can jump from platforms at 8 meters and higher into clear deep water. The combination of cliffs, clear water, and lush forest setting makes it a highlight of any Siquijor visit.
Diving and Snorkeling
Coral Garden off San Juan is an excellent snorkeling spot accessible from the beach. Tulapos Marine Sanctuary offers outstanding snorkeling and easy scuba diving for beginners. Several small dive shops in San Juan offer PADI courses and guided dives at excellent prices.
The Witchcraft Culture
Siquijors healing and folk magic traditions are real and practiced by mananambal (traditional healers). These practices are concentrated in San Antonio and most visible during Holy Week when healers gather at the ancient balete tree in Lazi. Approaching this culture with genuine curiosity and respect opens doors to fascinating conversations with locals proud of their unique heritage.
