Free Things to Do in the Philippines: 25 Zero-Cost Experiences
The Philippines is an extraordinarily generous country for budget travellers -- not just because things are cheap, but because many of the most extraordinary experiences cost absolutely nothing. Here are 25 genuinely free things to do across the archipelago.
Beaches and Nature: Free and World-Class
- Sunset on White Beach, Boracay -- the best free show in the Philippines happens every evening. No entrance fee. Just show up before 5:30pm and find a spot on the sand.
- Nacpan Beach, El Nido -- no entrance fee for this 4-km stretch of white sand. PHP 50 tricycle fee to get there. The beach itself is free.
- Batanes coastline walks -- the clifftop walks of Batan Island are free, extraordinary, and completely unspoilt. The Marlboro Hills (officially Racuh a Payaman) has a small entrance fee but the surrounding roads and coastal paths are free.
- Intramuros walls walk, Manila -- walking the exterior of the old walled city and its moat is free. Fort Santiago has an entrance fee but the Intramuros streets and churches are free to explore.
- Rizal Park, Manila -- the national park in Manila is free and pleasant in the early morning. The National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of Fine Arts are both free.
- Carbon Market, Cebu -- the largest public market in the Visayas. The visual experience of navigating this market is free and extraordinary.
- Chocolate Hills viewpoint, Bohol -- the standard Carmen viewpoint charges a small entrance fee but the alternative Sagbayan Peak viewpoint provides a similarly spectacular view for free (just pay for the transport to get there).
- Watching the sunrise on Cloud 9 boardwalk, Siargao -- the boardwalk out to the famous surf break is free to walk. At dawn (before surfing begins) you can watch world-class surfing from the walkway.
- Watching Paraw sailing at sunset, Boracay -- the traditional double outrigger sailboats leave from White Beach in the late afternoon. Watching them sail against the sunset from the beach costs nothing.
- Loboc River walk -- the Loboc River in Bohol is free to walk alongside. The river cruise costs money but walking the riverside path through the town costs nothing.
Cultural and Urban Experiences
- Quiapo Church, Manila -- the centuries-old church in the heart of Manila is free to enter and extraordinary in its fervour. Friday afternoon masses draw thousands of devotees.
- Vigan Calle Crisologo at dawn -- walking the UNESCO cobblestoned heritage street before 8am costs nothing and is one of the Philippines most remarkable experiences.
- National Museum of Fine Arts, Manila -- permanently free admission. The Juan Luna Spolarium painting alone justifies the visit.
- Local fiesta barangay celebrations -- every Philippine community has a patron saint feast day (fiesta). These celebrations are open to all, food is offered freely to strangers, and the experience is among the most genuinely Filipino things you can do.
- Sundown at BGC (Bonifacio Global City), Taguig -- the outdoor street art and open spaces of BGC are free to wander. Street art murals throughout the high street are world-class.
Active and Outdoor
- Hiking the Batad rice terrace trails -- the rice terrace trekking around Batad is free once you get there (transport and guide tip are the costs). The terraces themselves have no entrance charge.
- Swimming in river pools -- many river swimming holes across the Philippines are free: the pools below Mag-aso Falls (Bohol), various river swimming spots in Palawan.
- Cliff jumping at Las Cabanas, El Nido -- there is a cliff area near Las Cabanas Beach where people jump freely into the sea. No operator needed.
- Watching the Blue Hour from Coron viewpoint -- the hike up Mount Tapyas in Coron takes 30 minutes and rewards with a free panoramic view over Coron town and bay.
- Snorkelling off free beach access points -- many beach areas have snorkelling directly off the beach for free if you bring your own mask. Apo Island has a small entrance fee but some adjacent areas have free snorkelling.
Food Experiences
- Street food circuit: PHP 50-100 for a complete street food experience of fishball, isaw, kwek-kwek, and siomai. Not free but essentially zero cost.
- Taho morning vendor: the ambulant taho vendor who walks your street at 7am is one of the most Filipino experiences you can have, for PHP 15-25.
- Palengke (wet market) breakfast: any market in the Philippines serves cooked food stalls where locals eat. A complete Filipino breakfast for PHP 35-60.
- Carinderia lunch: a meal from a turo-turo carinderia near the market costs PHP 60-120 with rice and two dishes. Not free but budget-level extraordinary.
- Free water refill stations: major tourist areas now have water refill machines (PHP 2-5 per litre). Not zero but close. Better than buying bottled water.
