Every Type of Accommodation in Philippines: From Nipa Huts to Overwater Villas

From Nipa Huts to Overwater Villas: Every Type of Accommodation in the Philippines

The Philippines accommodation spectrum is wider than almost any other destination in Southeast Asia. At one end: overnight camping on uninhabited islands. At the other: luxury overwater villas with butler service and private pools. This guide maps the entire landscape so you can choose the right accommodation type for your travel style and budget.

Nipa Hut (Bahay Kubo) Homestays

The traditional Filipino house -- built on stilts from bamboo and nipa palm thatch -- is still common as budget accommodation in rural and island areas. Nipa hut homestays offer genuine cultural immersion: you eat with the family, sleep to the sound of the sea, and experience Philippine island life at its most authentic. Examples: Batanes stone house homestays (a variation using volcanic stone instead of bamboo), Calaguas Island camping with local family cooking, and coastal village homestays around Donsol or Samar. Price range: PHP 300-800 per night (often including meals).

Budget Guesthouses and Pension Houses

Pension houses are the Philippine version of guesthouses -- family-run establishments with private or shared rooms, fan or aircon, and cold or hot water. Found across all island destinations. Price range: PHP 600-1500 per night. Quality varies enormously. In El Nido and Siargao, competition has raised standards significantly -- PHP 800-1200 buys a clean private room with aircon in most areas. In Batanes, guesthouses are the primary accommodation type and are uniformly clean and welcoming.

Beach Resorts: The Philippine Middle

The category most travellers fall into. Philippine beach resorts range from basic bamboo bungalow setups (PHP 1500-3000 per night) to professional resorts with swimming pools, restaurants, and water sports facilities (PHP 3500-8000 per night). Key resort areas: El Nido (Las Cabanas Beach and Corong-Corong), Boracay (Stations 1-3 of White Beach), Panglao Island in Bohol, Malapascua and Bantayan in Cebu, Siargao General Luna area. Most mid-range beach resorts in established tourist destinations offer aircon, private bathroom, and breakfast for PHP 2500-5000 per night in peak season.

Boutique Hotels and Design Guesthouses

The Philippines boutique hotel scene has exploded since 2018. Particularly strong in: El Nido (high-concept cliff-top and cove-front boutiques), Siargao (surf-aesthetic boutique properties), and BGC Manila (urban design hotels). These typically cost PHP 5000-15000 per night and offer a curated aesthetic and service that standard beach resorts do not. Photography-worthy properties abound.

Island Resorts: Private and Semi-Private

The Philippines has dozens of private island resorts where the entire island -- or most of it -- belongs to the resort. These range from mid-range (Club Paradise in Coron, around USD 200-400 per night) to ultra-luxury (Amanpulo on Pamalican Island, from USD 1500+ per night). Semi-private island resorts are more accessible: Miniloc Island Resort in El Nido (El Nido Resorts), Pangulasian Island Resort, and Lagen Island Resort are the established luxury options in the El Nido archipelago.

Overwater Villas

Maldives-style overwater villas are a relatively recent addition to the Philippines. Several properties have established them: Bohol Beach Club (Panglao), Club Paradise (Coron), and various properties in Siargao and around Palawan. They are not as established as Maldives overwater villas and the lagoon conditions vary significantly. Price range: USD 300-1000+ per night depending on property.

Live-Aboard Dive Boats

A unique accommodation category: diving the Philippines from a live-aboard boat. Required for Tubbataha (no island accommodation) and popular for Coron wrecks, Sulu Sea, and Visayan dive circuits. Price range: USD 150-400 per person per night (all-inclusive of meals, dives, and equipment). Season: Tubbataha live-aboards operate March-June only.
