Siargao used to be a secret known only to hardcore surfers willing to endure two-day journeys involving ferries, vans, and long waits at regional bus stations. Then direct flights happened. Today, getting to Siargao from Manila is a 2-hour journey that has transformed this teardrop-shaped island into one of the Philippines most sought-after destinations. This guide covers every route option, real prices, and the practical details that travel blogs often leave out.
The Direct Flight Option: Manila to Siargao
Sayak Airport (IAO) in General Luna, Siargao, is a small regional airport with a single runway. It handles turboprops and smaller jet aircraft. Several airlines offer direct flights from Manila.
Cebu Pacific
Cebu Pacific operates direct Manila-Siargao flights daily or near-daily depending on season. The flight takes approximately 2 hours using ATR 72 turboprop aircraft. Fares range from 1,500 to 4,500 pesos one way, excluding baggage. During promo sales, Manila-Siargao fares can drop to 800 pesos or below. This is usually the cheapest direct option from Manila.

PAL operates Manila-Siargao via PAL Express on most days, typically using ATR aircraft for the same 2-hour flight time. Fares are higher at 2,500 to 6,000 pesos but include 20 kg checked baggage. For heavy packers, the total cost gap narrows significantly.
Via Cebu: Two-Hop Option
The Cebu connection is worth considering if you cannot find a direct Manila-Siargao flight or want to combine both islands in one trip. Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and PAL all fly Manila-Cebu multiple times daily in 1 hour 20 minutes. From Cebu Mactan Airport, Cebu Pacific operates Cebu-Siargao direct flights at about 45 minutes several times weekly. The two-hop journey via Cebu takes 3 to 4 hours total including connection time. Book both legs with enough buffer time -- at least 3 hours minimum at Mactan.
Overland Plus Ferry: The Budget Route
Before direct flights existed, travelers reached Siargao via a Cebu-Surigao ferry plus a boat from Surigao City to Siargao. This route is still used by ultra-budget travelers and those who enjoy the journey as part of the adventure. The Cebu-Surigao ferry route is operated by 2GO Travel and takes approximately 14 to 15 hours overnight. Bunks cost 800 to 1,500 pesos, private cabins 2,500 to 4,000 pesos. From Surigao City pier, a fastcraft to Siargao at Dapa port takes 2 hours and costs 250 to 350 pesos. Total Cebu-to-Siargao journey time: 17 to 20 hours. Total cost: 1,500 to 3,000 pesos including meals. It is cheap, adventurous, and beautiful -- but not for those on a schedule.
Sayak Airport: What to Expect
Sayak Airport is tiny. There is one arrival and departure hall, no luggage carousel (bags are walked out onto the tarmac), and limited waiting areas. The positive side: you are through the airport in 15 minutes from plane to exit. From Sayak Airport to General Luna, the main tourist hub and Cloud 9 surf break, the journey is approximately 30 minutes by tricycle at 150 to 200 pesos or by shared van at 100 to 150 pesos. Most resorts offer pickup if you book ahead.
Best Time to Visit and Flight Availability
Siargao peak surf season runs March to November, peaking in July to September when the swells are biggest. Direct flights are most frequent December to May. During typhoon season from June to November, small aircraft schedules are more vulnerable to disruption -- always have one extra day of buffer at the end of your trip.
Getting Around Siargao
Once you are on the island, motorbike rental at 400 to 600 pesos per day is the most popular way to get around. Habal-habal motorcycle taxis cover routes where you do not want to drive yourself. Tricycles handle short town trips. The main attractions -- Cloud 9, Sugba Lagoon, Sohoton Cove -- are all accessible within a day trip from General Luna.
Booking Tips for Siargao Flights
Book Manila-Siargao flights at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance during peak season. The limited aircraft size means flights fill up quickly, especially for weekend departures around December to January and Holy Week. For the return journey, build in buffer time before any international departures from Manila. A delayed Siargao-Manila flight is not uncommon, and a missed international connection from NAIA is expensive to fix.
