Malapascua Dive Resorts: Where to Stay for Thresher Sharks
Malapascua is a small island off the northern tip of Cebu with one extraordinary claim to fame: it is the only place in the world where thresher sharks can be reliably seen by divers. Every morning, before dawn, boats head out to Monad Shoal — a submerged seamount at around 20 to 30 metres — where thresher sharks rise from the deep to be cleaned by labroides wrasse. The experience of watching these beautiful, long-tailed sharks glide silently out of the blue is one that divers travel halfway around the world to have.
Beyond the threshers, Malapascua offers excellent diving at Gato Island (whitetip reef sharks, sea snakes, and a cave), Lapus-Lapus (manta rays in season), and numerous macro sites for nudibranch and critter enthusiasts. The island itself is tiny and gorgeous — a five-minute walk from one side to the other, with Bounty Beach on one coast and a quiet fishing village on the other.
Best Dive Resorts on Malapascua
Thresher Shark Divers
The most established dive operation on Malapascua, with a strong reputation for professional guiding and conservation-conscious practice. The resort accommodation is comfortable rather than luxurious — clean rooms with air conditioning from 3,000 PHP per night — but the dive boats are well-maintained, the guides know Monad Shoal intimately, and their morning thresher shark dives are the best organised on the island. All-inclusive dive packages are available.

Evolution Dive Resort
Evolution is one of the top-rated resorts on Malapascua, combining a well-regarded dive operation with genuinely comfortable accommodation. The dive boats are modern, the dive guides have years of experience at Monad Shoal and Gato Island, and the rooms are clean and well-furnished. Air-conditioned rooms from 3,500 PHP per night; dive packages start at 5,000 PHP per day including accommodation, meals, and two dives.
Tepanee Beach Resort
Tepanee is Malapascua's most upscale resort — a cliffside property with stunning views over Bounty Beach and the Visayan Sea beyond. The infinity pool is the highlight, seemingly floating above the sea. Rooms are stylishly decorated with local crafts and materials. Rates from 5,500 PHP per night. The resort has a dive centre and can arrange thresher shark dives and custom itineraries. Best for couples who want luxury alongside their diving.
White Sand Bungalows
For budget divers, White Sand Bungalows offers some of the most affordable accommodation directly on Bounty Beach — fan rooms from 900 PHP per night, with simple meals available from the attached restaurant. The dive operators they partner with are reliable and safety-conscious. An excellent choice for committed divers who want to maximise dive budget rather than accommodation budget.
The Thresher Shark Dive: What to Expect
The alarm goes off at 4:30am. By 5am, you are on the boat heading out to Monad Shoal in darkness. The descent to 25 to 30 metres happens quickly, and then the waiting begins — neutrally buoyant, breathing slowly, watching the blue. And then they appear: thresher sharks, two or three metres long, their distinctive scythe-shaped tails trailing behind them as they circle the cleaning station. The encounter typically lasts 20 to 40 minutes before the sharks descend back into the deep as sunlight fills the water column above.
It is worth knowing that thresher sightings are not guaranteed — these are wild animals responding to ocean conditions. Most divers see them, but a bad day is possible. Experienced guides will know when conditions favour good sightings and can adjust dive plans accordingly.
Other Dives from Malapascua
Gato Island is a short boat ride from Malapascua and offers a completely different experience — a cave dive through a tunnel inhabited by white-tip reef sharks during the day, sea snakes coiling through the water column, and beautiful coral formations on the exterior walls. Monad Shoal also has a second site (Devil's Backbone) that is excellent for manta rays during season. Lapus-Lapus reef hosts large schools of barracuda and occasional eagle rays.
Getting to Malapascua
The journey to Malapascua requires flying to Cebu City, then taking a bus or van from the North Bus Terminal to Maya (three to four hours), then a 30-minute banca crossing to Malapascua. The total journey from Cebu City takes five to six hours. It is worth it — Malapascua's remoteness is part of its charm. The crossing can be rough in bad weather, so monitor conditions if travelling outside the calm season (October to May).
