Iloilo to Bacolod Ferry: Crossing the Guimaras Strait

The Iloilo to Bacolod crossing is one of those routes that travelers discover when they are doing the full Visayas island circuit -- Cebu to Iloilo, Iloilo to Bacolod, Bacolod to Cebu, or some variation thereof. It is not as famous as the Cebu-Bohol or Cebu-Iloilo crossings, but it is an essential link in the Visayas travel network and, once you understand how it works, it is actually a straightforward and pleasant journey.

Iloilo to Bacolod: The Route Explained

Iloilo City sits at the southeast corner of Panay Island, separated from Negros Island by the Guimaras Strait to the east. Bacolod City, the capital of Negros Occidental, is on the northwest coast of Negros Island. The direct crossing by fast ferry from Ortiz Wharf in Iloilo City to Bacolod takes about 1 hour.

There is also an indirect route via Guimaras Island -- a short ferry hop from Iloilo to Guimaras, then another short hop from Guimaras to Bacolod. This takes around 2.5 to 3 hours total with waiting time but is a genuinely interesting addition to your route if you have time to stop on Guimaras (famous for its sweet mangoes and quiet beaches).

The Direct Iloilo-Bacolod Ferry

The primary operator for the direct Iloilo to Bacolod route is Weesam Express, which runs fast craft services between the two cities. Ocean Jet has also served this route at various times -- check current schedules as operators occasionally change or add services.

Ferries depart from Ortiz Wharf in Iloilo City, which is in the old downtown area near the Molo district. From SM City Iloilo or the airport, a taxi or Grab to Ortiz Wharf takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic and your starting point. The fare is typically 80 to 150 pesos.

Fares for the Iloilo-Bacolod direct ferry run approximately 240 to 300 pesos one way. The journey takes around 1 hour on fast craft. Departures typically run throughout the day from early morning until early evening -- check specific departure times with operators as schedules can vary by day of week and season.

The Guimaras Island Hop Option

If you have 3 to 4 hours to spare, the indirect route via Guimaras is highly recommended. From Jordan Wharf in Iloilo (a different pier from Ortiz), motorized pumpboats run continuously to Buenavista on Guimaras. From Buenavista, you cross to Pulupandan Port on Negros Island, then take a jeepney or Grab to Bacolod.

Guimaras Island is famous throughout the Philippines for producing the sweetest mangoes in the country. A 2 to 3 hour stop allows you to visit a mango farm, pick up fresh fruit, and see a corner of the Philippines that most tourists skip entirely. It adds time but adds genuine value to the journey.

The Bacolod Side: What to Expect on Arrival

Bacolod has two main ferry arrival points: the Bredco Port (for the direct Iloilo service) and the Pulupandan Port (for the Guimaras indirect route). Bredco Port is located south of Bacolod City center, approximately 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or Grab from the city's main commercial areas.

Bacolod City is the capital of Negros Occidental and the home of the famous MassKara Festival (held every October). The city is known for its food -- particularly chicken inasal (grilled chicken), which originated here and has since spread throughout the Philippines. A meal at Manokan Country, a cluster of inasal restaurants near the provincial capitol, is essentially mandatory if you are passing through.

Combining Iloilo-Bacolod with the Visayas Loop

The Iloilo-Bacolod route is a natural bridge on the western Visayas island circuit. Coming from Manila or Cebu, a common itinerary runs: fly Manila or Cebu to Iloilo (stay 2 to 3 nights, visit Iloilo City, Guimaras, and the Dinagyang festival in January), take the ferry to Bacolod (stay 2 to 3 nights, explore Negros Occidental), then fly Bacolod to Cebu or Manila to continue. The ferry crossing at under 300 pesos is the cheapest transport link in this entire circuit.

Practical Tips for the Crossing

Arrive at Ortiz Wharf at least 30 minutes before your intended ferry departure. The wharf area has several small eateries and a convenience store. Terminal fees are collected separately from your fare -- have 30 to 50 pesos in cash ready for the terminal payment window.

For the return journey Bacolod to Iloilo, the same operators run the same schedule in reverse from Bredco Port. Taxis and Grab are readily available in Bacolod to get you to the port.
