Grab arrived in the Philippines in 2013 and has since become the default way for urban Filipinos and tourists alike to navigate city transport. The app-based ride-hailing platform provides fixed, transparent fares, cashless payment options, and driver accountability that standard Philippine taxis have historically struggled to match. Whether you are navigating Metro Manila, getting around Cebu City, or reaching your hotel from Davao Airport, Grab is likely your best option. Here is everything you need to know.
Where Grab Works in the Philippines
Grab operates across multiple Philippine cities. The major coverage areas as of 2026 include:
- Metro Manila: Comprehensive coverage across all 17 cities, including NCR Plus and surrounding areas
- Cebu City and Metro Cebu: Covers Cebu City, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Talisay, and Naga
- Davao City: Covers the main city area and surrounding districts
- Iloilo City: Covers the city and Pavia, Oton area
- Cagayan de Oro: City center and immediate surrounds
- Bacolod: City center coverage
- Zamboanga: Limited coverage in the city center
In smaller cities and provincial towns, Grab is not available -- this is where tricycles, habal-habals, and jeepneys take over as the primary options.

Download the Grab app on iOS or Android. Registration requires a phone number -- your home country number will work for account creation. For payment, you can use a credit or debit card (Visa and Mastercard both work), or load a GrabPay wallet with cash at any 7-Eleven, SM Hypermarket, or other Grab partner outlets. GrabPay is the preferred payment method for most Philippine Grab drivers as it eliminates change-making issues.
If your foreign card does not work initially, try adding it manually through the payment settings in the app. Most major international credit cards issued in the US, Europe, and Australia work without issue for Grab Philippines.
Grab Car Types in the Philippines
The Philippines Grab app offers several vehicle types:
GrabCar Economy
Standard sedans (Toyota Vios, Honda City, Mitsubishi Mirage, etc.) for up to 4 passengers. This is the most common and cheapest car option. Suitable for most city trips.
GrabCar Premium
Larger, newer, or more premium vehicles for up to 4 passengers. Higher cost but more comfortable -- particularly useful for longer airport transfers where space and comfort matter.
GrabShare
Carpooling option where you share the vehicle with another passenger going in a similar direction. Cheaper than GrabCar but slower due to additional stops.
GrabCar Plus
6-seater vehicles for larger groups or families. Also available in some cities.
Grab vs. Standard Yellow Taxis in Manila
Manila's metered yellow taxis have a complicated reputation. Stories of broken meters, refusals to take certain routes, and demanding excess fares are common among tourists. In fairness, many Manila taxi drivers are honest and professional -- but the unpredictability creates stress that Grab eliminates entirely.
Grab advantages over taxis: fixed fare shown in advance, cashless option available, driver details and route trackable, easy dispute resolution through the app. Taxi advantages over Grab: immediately available at any taxi stand without booking wait time, can be cheaper on short trips during surge pricing, works without a data connection.
For airport arrivals, Grab is strongly recommended. NAIA can be chaotic with aggressive taxi touts. Open the Grab app while you are still in the terminal and book before you walk out the exit -- your driver will meet you at the designated pickup point.
Grab at Philippine Airports
Most Philippine airports now have designated Grab pickup areas. At NAIA, the pickup areas are separate from the regular taxi queues -- ask airport staff for the Grab waiting area or check the app for directions. At Mactan-Cebu Airport, Grab pickups are allowed and well-organized. At smaller airports (El Nido, Siargao, Davao, etc.), Grab may not be available -- use the app to check before assuming.
Grab for Food Delivery
GrabFood is the food delivery arm of Grab and is extensively used across Metro Manila and major Philippine cities. If you are staying in an Airbnb or guesthouse without a restaurant and do not feel like going out, GrabFood delivers from hundreds of restaurants. Payment uses the same GrabPay wallet or card.
Surge Pricing and When to Expect It
Grab uses dynamic pricing, so fares increase during peak demand periods: rush hours (7 to 10am and 5 to 8pm on weekdays), rainy weather, immediately after large events, and late Friday and Saturday nights. During surge pricing, the multiplier is shown in the app before you confirm your booking. If the surge is high, waiting 10 to 15 minutes for it to subside is often worth it for cheaper fares.
GrabBike and GrabMoto
Grab offers motorcycle taxi services in some Philippine cities (GrabBike or GrabMoto depending on the region). This is a faster option for single passengers during heavy traffic. The app requires you to have a helmet -- some drivers carry extra helmets but this is not guaranteed. Check current availability in your city within the app.
