El Nido to Coron Ferry: All Options, Prices and Booking Tips

The stretch of ocean between El Nido and Coron is arguably the most beautiful boat journey in the Philippines. Both are world-famous diving and island-hopping destinations -- El Nido in northern Palawan, Coron on Busuanga Island to the northeast -- and the route between them cuts through the Linapacan Strait past limestone islands, hidden lagoons, and turquoise water that makes even experienced travelers gasp. Here is everything you need to know to make the crossing.

How Far Is El Nido to Coron?

The direct distance by sea is approximately 170 km, but no vessel travels in a perfectly straight line. Depending on the route and stops, the actual journey covers 200 to 250 km. Travel time ranges from 8 to 9 hours on the direct passenger speedboat to 2 to 3 days on the island-hopping transfer route that stops at Linapacan and other islands along the way.

Option 1: Direct Speedboat (El Nido to Coron Shuttle)

The fastest way to get between El Nido and Coron is on one of the purpose-built passenger speedboats that operate this route regularly. These boats hold 20 to 40 passengers, have covered seating, and make the crossing in approximately 8 to 9 hours including one or two brief stops at islands along the way.

Operators offering direct El Nido to Coron speedboats include Roro Sea Express, San Nicolas Shipping, and several others. Fares typically range from 1,800 to 2,500 pesos per person one way. Boats usually depart El Nido in the morning (around 6am to 8am) and arrive in Coron in the mid-afternoon. The reverse direction (Coron to El Nido) follows a similar schedule.

During peak season from November to May, boats run daily. During off-season, services may reduce to 3 to 4 times per week. Book your ticket at the El Nido town pier or through your accommodation -- most guesthouses in El Nido can arrange tickets. Advance booking is strongly recommended during December and Holy Week when boats sell out a week or more ahead.

What the Boat Journey Is Like

The 8 to 9 hour crossing is the experience itself. The first few hours after leaving El Nido take you through the dramatic karst scenery of Bacuit Bay before heading out into the Sulu Sea. The middle section crosses open water -- this is where sea conditions vary most. The final approach to Coron through the islands around Busuanga is spectacular.

The boats are not luxurious. You will sit on a bench or plastic chair for most of the journey. Bring snacks, water, seasickness medication if needed, sun protection, and a waterproof bag for your belongings. If you are prone to motion sickness, the open ocean section can be challenging during rough sea conditions.

Option 2: Island-Hopping Transfer Route

The island-hopping transfer route is for travelers with 2 to 3 extra days and a desire to turn the journey between El Nido and Coron into an adventure of its own. This route stops at beautiful islands in the Linapacan group -- including Linapacan Island itself, Port Barton (a popular detour), and several private islands -- allowing you to camp, snorkel, and explore places most tourists never see.

Tour operators in El Nido and Coron offer organized island-hopping transfers with accommodation arranged along the route. Prices for a 3-day transfer with island stops, accommodation, and meals typically run 8,000 to 15,000 pesos per person. This option requires a minimum of 2 travelers and advance booking of at least a week. It is one of the best travel experiences in the Philippines if you have the time.

Option 3: Via Manila (Fly)

It is possible to travel between El Nido and Coron via Manila -- fly or take an Air Swift flight El Nido to Manila, then fly or take a ferry Manila to Coron. This is obviously more expensive and time-consuming than the direct boat, but worth knowing about if direct boats are fully booked or if sea conditions are too rough for the crossing. Flight times are approximately 1.5 hours each way.

Best Time to Make the Crossing

November to May (dry season) is the best time for the El Nido to Coron crossing. Seas are calmer, sky is clearer, and visibility for the islands is at its best. January to March are generally the calmest months. June to October brings southwest monsoon conditions -- swells can be significant and the direct speedboat service may be cancelled on some days. If you are planning the crossing during this period, build 2 to 3 extra days into your schedule.

What to Pack for the Crossing

Essential items for the El Nido to Coron boat journey: at least 2 liters of water per person, sunscreen (the boats have a sun deck and reflected light is intense), a light jacket or windbreaker (the open ocean section can be surprisingly cold), snacks, motion sickness medication if needed, and a waterproof dry bag or case for electronics and documents. The boats can spray water on rough sections.

Arriving in Coron

The El Nido to Coron speedboat drops passengers at Coron Port, also called the Coron Public Market Port. From here, tricycles take you to Coron town (5 to 10 minutes, 50 to 100 pesos) or to accommodations further around the bay. If you have a resort reservation, contact them before arrival as many offer complimentary pickup from the port.

The El Nido to Coron route is not just a transfer -- it is a journey through one of the most beautiful seascapes on earth. Even the most efficient way to do it (direct speedboat) gives you hours of spectacular island scenery. Take your time, look around, and enjoy every moment of it.
