Dumaguete and Siquijor 3-Day Trip: The Perfect Combo
Dumaguete is Negros Oriental's provincial capital - a university town with a wide boulevard along the sea, sidewalk cafes that stay open late, and one of the Philippines' most relaxed urban energies. Thirty minutes away by ferry is Siquijor - a small island with a reputation as a mystical place (folk healers, firefly forests, ancient trees) and a reality as one of the Philippines' most beautiful and crowd-free island destinations. Together, they make a perfect 3-day trip from Cebu.
Getting There
Fast ferry from Cebu South Port to Dumaguete (2 hours, 350-450 PHP, multiple daily departures). Alternatively, fly Cebu to Dumaguete (40 minutes) if you are pressed for time.
Day 1: Dumaguete - Boulevard and Apo Island
Walk the Rizal Boulevard - a palm-lined promenade along Dumaguete's seafront that has been the social heart of the city for over a century. The students from Silliman University (founded 1901, one of the Philippines' oldest) give it a youthful energy even on weekday mornings. Stop at Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries for silvanas (frozen cashew meringue buttercream wafers) - Dumaguete's signature delicacy and one of the best things you will eat in the Philippines.

Browse tours →Afternoon: hire a motorbike and ride 35 kilometers south to Malatapay. From Malatapay port, take a bangka to Apo Island (30 minutes, 2,000 PHP/boat return, max 5-6 people). Apo Island is a small marine sanctuary with some of the Philippines' best snorkeling - the sea turtles here (mostly green turtles and hawksbills) are so accustomed to human presence that they swim within arm's reach. The conservation program has been running since 1985 and the results are visible: the reef is pristine, the fish are large and abundant, and the turtles are healthy. Snorkel entry fee: 300 PHP. Return to Dumaguete by 6pm.
Day 2: Siquijor
Fast ferry Dumaguete to Siquijor town (30-45 minutes, 200-250 PHP). Rent a motorbike at the port (350-400 PHP/day) and do the island loop - Siquijor is small enough to circle completely in half a day. First stop: San Isidro Bandilaan Mountain National Park in the center of the island - giant century-old acacia trees, a small viewpoint over the sea, and the sacred spring where healers gather healing herbs. The forest is genuinely atmospheric.
Salagdoong Beach on the east coast is Siquijor's most famous beach - dramatic rock formations, turquoise water, and a cliff-jumping platform at two levels (5 meters and 8 meters). Entry 30 PHP. Cambugahay Falls in the island interior (15 minutes south of Lazi town) is a series of three tiered pools in the jungle - you can swing in on a bamboo rope and land in the upper pool. Entry 30 PHP. Evening: stay overnight in Siquijor or ferry back to Dumaguete depending on your schedule.
Day 3: Siquijor Continued or Return
If staying overnight: explore the heritage St. Francis of Assisi Church in Siquijor town (1783, the oldest church in the province) in the morning. The church cemetery beside it has remarkable old Spanish-era tombs. Try the traditional folk healer (mananambal) market in San Antonio during Holy Week if your timing aligns - healers sell potions, amulets, and herbal medicines gathered from the mountains. It is respectful to observe without being condescending; this is a genuine living tradition. Ferry back to Dumaguete and fly or ferry home.
